An orthodox priest has reportedly been injured in a shooting in the French city of Lyon and the assailant has fled.
Police sources say the priest was fired on twice at around 4pm local time as he was closing the church, and was being treated on site for life-threatening injuries.
France’s interior ministry has said a serious is incident underway in the Jean-Macé sector in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon, with security forces at the scene.
People have been asked to avoid the area as a search gets underway for the gunman.
It comes after residents of France were warned to ‘expect more attacks’ following a brutal church stabbing in Nice that left three people dead on Thursday.
A man shouting ‘Allahu Akbar!’ (God is Greatest) beheaded a woman and killed two other people in the southern city’s Notre-Dame Basilica.
Three more attacks were foiled that day, while on Friday a man was arrested in Paris after alleged trying to attack police with knives.
The incidents came just two weeks after a schoolteacher in a Paris suburb was beheaded by an 18-year-old Chechen, apparently incensed by the teacher showing a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad in class.
After visiting Nice President Emmanuel Macron declared the country ‘under attack’ and deployed thousands of soldiers to protect sites such as places of worship and schools.
