Ilhan Omar blasts Trump for downplaying coronavirus pandemic

Rep. Ilhan Omar is accusing President Donald Trump of downplaying the coronavirus pandemic, which she predicts could kill “hundreds of thousands” of Americans.

“I think with each day that goes by, it becomes clearer and clearer how badly this administration has completely failed the American people,” Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, said in an interview on SiriusXM.

“We have the richest country in the world and we have all kinds of advantages, yet thousands, hundreds of thousands of people could die because of his mismanagement and his inability to be quite upfront with people is quite devastating.”

Omar also called on Trump to fully implement the Defense Production Act to spur production of critically needed medical supplies and provide more relief to the disaster epicenter in New York City.

Since coming to Congress in 2018, Omar has been one of Trump’s most consistent critics. She has called the president a racist and pushed to impeach him last year.

The United States leads the world in coronavirus infections, with 277,607 known cases and 7,406 deaths.

New York has locked down all non-essential businesses in an effort to stem the spread of the virus. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has repeatedly warned the state is dangerously low on medical supplies and could run out of life-saving ventilators as early as next week.
