'God bless': Current, former NFL players react to Jaguars firing Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer's time as Jacksonville Jaguars head coach has ended just 13 games after it started. Owner Shad Khan fired him in the wee hours of Thursday morning, not long after former Jags kicker Josh Lambo alleged that Meyer had kicked him once during practice.

That was the straw that broke the camel's back, but there were many, many more straws that came before. His 2-11 record. His attitude with the media. Reportedly berating his coaches. That time he went to a bar and flirted with a woman who wasn't his wife instead of going home with his team after a tough loss. (To discover all the many incidents that contributed to Meyer's firing, check out Yahoo Sports' helpful timeline.)

It's not surprising news, but it's certainly big news. There hasn't been much reaction from current NFL players yet, though Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey spoke for many of them early Thursday morning when the news broke.

God bless 🙏🏾

— Jalen Ramsey (@jalenramsey) December 16, 2021

Jags players reportedly vented to Rams players after the two teams faced each other in Week 13, so Ramsey has likely heard a few stories about Meyer that most people haven't.

Michael Thomas of the New Orleans Saints also had a pretty excellent reaction.

Urban will bounce back. I understand misery loves company.

Former players like Emmanuel Acho, Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, Torrey Smith and T.J. Lang also had a few things to say.

The Jaguars really thought they were gonna fire Urban Meyer while we were asleep, like we’re not gonna wake up and see it.

He didn’t even make one full season 🤯 pic.twitter.com/2XsiVSwiJX

Have you ever watched “The Year of the Bull” documentary, that’s how coaching was for me all my life so you won’t like my answer to this question. https://t.co/mZBQokjKI3

Reallllllly felt like the Urbs was trying to get fired this whole time.

— TJ Lang (@TJLang70) December 16, 2021

He has ruined his reputation at this point. I’m not even sure he could do college again. https://t.co/PRoZqrHc8u

Former kickers Jay Feely and Josh Scobee had some opinions about Meyer, and — surprise! — they were not good opinions.

Memo to NFL teams, don’t hire college coaches as your HC
Urban Meyer, Bill O’Brien, Chip Kelly, Greg Schiano, Bobby Petrino, nick Saban
Amazing thing is That’s a list of the coaches I’ve heard the worst stories about in my almost 25 yrs in the NFL playing and calling games https://t.co/pbbMr3axHx

— Jay Feely (@jayfeely) December 16, 2021

Here lies one of the biggest issue Rich, he didn’t regard himself as a rookie coach. In fact, he was furious about a player referring to him as a rookie coach in a speech the player gave to the defense.
1st time coaches in the NFL have to prove themselves just like a player does https://t.co/Q3bHeikaGV

This time, Shad, got it right

Current and even former players may not want to say too much about Meyer's firing, but fans and the media were there to pick up the slack. Warren Sharp's video about Meyer's utterly disastrous tenure may be the best thing you'll see on the internet today.

Josh Lambo kicking stats:

Field goals: 128/147
Extra points: 143/159
Kick that got Urban Meyer fired: 5/10

Listen, don’t be sad, Urban Meyer got fired doing what he loved best: belittling coaches he himself hired and telling people he’s allowed to kick them.

— Kevin Clark (@bykevinclark) December 16, 2021

I love that this is what got Urban Meyer shitcanned.

It feels like a Seinfeld bit.

George: After months of fruitless attempts I finally got fired!
Elaine: For what?
George: I kicked the kicker.
Jerry: You kicked the kicker?
George: I kicked the kicker.
Kramer: How hard?

Urban Meyer signed a 5 year deal, said he wanted to gain 250 yards on the ground and in the air every game, called his coaches losers, called his kicker a dipshit and kicked him, groped a lady in his own restaurant, went 2-11, and got fired. Just an absolute legend. 👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽

I knew it wasn’t going well but calling Urban Meyer’s NFL career a dumpster fire is a disgrace to the good name of dumpster fires https://t.co/jZBNMeJMq4

— trey wingo (@wingoz) December 15, 2021

I’ve seen several “Urban Meyer struggled because he didn’t give Tim Tebow enough of a chance” tweets and all things considered, I think that’s one of the funniest sports takes of all time

— Rodger Sherman (@rodger) December 16, 2021

Urban Meyer tricked the Jaguars! The man went got a bag and then lost his damn mind on purpose. The crazy thing is that we probably see him on TV talking football in 2 weeks! Man if he was… never mind and CARRY ON..
