Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has not endorsed any candidate in the Democratic mayoral primary race, showed his support for frontrunner Eric Adams by definitively calling him a “Brooklynite.”
De Blasio dismissed reports that the current Brooklyn borough president lives in New Jersey.
“I’ve known Eric Adams for decades, he’s a Brooklynite,” de Blasio affirmed when asked about the controversy Thursday during his daily City Hall press briefing.
“Here’s a guy, born and raised in New York City,” de Blasio continued.
“Became a police officer, served 20-plus years,” de Blasio said.
“He’s a New Yorker, he’s served this city in many different capacities — I just don’t see an issue here,” he added about the former state senator.
Adams tried to counter the claims that he lives in Fort Lee where he co-owns an apartment with his partner, Tracey Collins, by giving reporters a tour of his Bedford-Stuyvesant home Wednesday as rivals — who are trailing Adams in the latest polls — continued to raise questions about his residency.
Adams said Brooklyn is his primary residence but he occasionally stays with his partner in New Jersey.
De Blasio has not publicly given his blessing to any of the leading eight candidates for the Democratic mayoral primary. Recent polls have shown that receiving Hizzoner’s blessing may hurt more than it helps because he’s so unpopular among voters.
Last week, he did not comment directly on an Atlantic magazine report that said he quietly tried to gather support for Adams from union leaders in February.
Adams has said he has not spoken with the mayor about a potential endorsement. He continues to be voters’ number one pick in recent polls for the June 22 primary. Early voting starts Saturday.
