Couple wowed by neighbors' festive display hang sign saying 'Ditto'

‘We can’t keep up, but we want to join in the fun’: couple wowed by their neighbors’ 15,000 light display erect single decoration saying ‘Ditto’

  •  Auryn Kucheran’s Christmas display in Warman, Saskatchewan city leaves neighbors breathless every year
  • This year, Auryn used more than 15,000 lights to decorate his house and a set up a movie projector featuring all-time favorite Christmas movies
  • Next door neighbors Chris Boechler and his partner, Mandie Scrivens, knew ‘we can’t keep up with them, but we want to join in on the fun’
  • They cleverly hung a ‘Ditto’ sign pointing out to the winter wonderland extravaganza Auryn crafted
  • All is well between the neighbors, who are equally delighted by how the situation unfolded, with Auryn’s decorations – and Chris’ and Mandie’s wit – being praised

A clever couple thought of a very simple way to avoid competing with their neighbors’ dazzling Christmas display while making minimal effort.

Auryn Kucheran’s Christmas display in Warman, Saskatchewan City, Canada, leaves neighbors breathless every year. But for 2021, next-door neighbors Chris Boechler and partner Mandie Scrivens came close to upstaging their friend by erecting a simple sign saying ‘Ditto’, with a yellow arrow pointing next door.

The couple said: ‘We knew we can’t keep up with them, but we want to join in the fun,’ to explain their idea.

Kucheran’s decorations involve 15,000 lights, and a special movie screen onto which he beams favorite festive films, with neighbors able to make requests via Facebook.

And he is delighted by Boechler and Scriven’s affectionate tribute to his hard work, with the clever complimentary displays making headlines around the world.

‘I think I am lucky to have a neighbor like that. There is a lot of people who don’t get into the Christmas spirit and it’s nice to have someone who does,’ Chris (left) said

‘It’s a winter wonderland. He works so hard on it and just brightens up everyone’s mood around the block,’ Chris told CBC News.

‘I think I am lucky to have a neighbor like that. There is a lot of people who don’t get into the Christmas spirit and it’s nice to have someone who does,’ he added.

Chris and Mandie were initially worried that Auryn was not going to find their clever decoration funny at all.

But Auryn found the decoration truly hilarious, and was grateful for his neighbors’ sense of humor.

‘Thanks to our wonderful neighbors, we made NATIONAL headlines!’ Auryn wrote on Facebook.

‘He loved it, which was good,’ said Chris. ‘Everyone seems to like it and get a good laugh out of it, and it’s the whole reason we did it.’

The plywood base of the Ditto sign is painted black with 600 yellow lights. The holes are pre-drilled and the lights are perfectly glued.

The fact that the sign is the sole decoration in the house, accentuates its comedic effect.

‘When we decided to build this sign we kept everything else in the basement, and just let it shine by itself,’ Chris said.

Chris and Mandie described Auryn as Warman’s local Clark Griswold, the sparky Christmas-obsessed character from National Lampoon’s Vacation portrayed by Chevy Chase in the 1989 film.

Chris said Auryn begins putting up decorations early on during the fall and ‘every year gets better and better.’

Auryn told CBC he’s been running his display for a while, but felt motivated to put up even more decorations after the pandemic hit.

‘Everyone needed a reason to smile, especially at Christmas. That’s why I do it, and why I will continue to do it,’ he told the outlet.

‘This fall he built a 4×8 projector screen that he projects the movies on with a sidebar on each side,’ Mandie said.

Auryn has already started to play some Christmas classics like Home Alone and Elf.
