Yellowstone’s Kayce star shares the one thing he loves about working with Kevin Costner

Yellowstone: Kayce and Monica clash over his job

Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama Yellowstone immediately became essential viewing when he cast iconic film star Kevin Costner in the lead role as John Dutton. After years of experience in some of the biggest movies of all time, his co-star Luke Grimes revealed the legendary actor is still a pleasure to work with.

Kayce Dutton star Luke Grimes has praised his time working alongside Hollywood star Kevin Costner over three seasons of hit show, Yellowstone.

Showrunner and director Taylor Sheridan has become a surprise hit in recent years, in part thanks to Costner’s stunning lead performance as ranch owner John Dutton.

In an interview with Monsters and Critics, Grimes confirmed working with the seasoned film star has been an invaluable learning experience.

He recalled: “Working with someone who is that iconic and whose career is that legendary is always sort of a pinch-me moment, like, ‘Is this real?’”

“It feels like a benchmark in your own career, and you try to soak in as much knowledge as you can.”

Kicking off his career as a leading man in 1987’s historical crime picture The Untouchables, Costner has since become one of the most recognisable American film stars alive today.

He has also accumulated a number of prestigious accolades, including Academy Awards for Best Picture and Director for his work on the 1991 epic, Dances with Wolves.

Tipping his hat to Costner’s career, Grimes added: “Obviously, he’s done everything you can do in a film career.”

Costner has cemented himself as a screen legend by portraying classic heroes such as Robin Hood in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Ray Kinsella in cult classic Field of Dreams.

More recently he’s portrayed Superman’s adoptive dad in Man of Steel, and had supporting roles in awards favourites Hidden Figures and Molly’s Game.

Despite his long career on the big screen, Grimes revealed the lead star was just as passionate about his latest role for television.

He continued: “One thing that I really enjoy to see in him is his passion for the work. It’s still very much there.”

“He still wants to work and is still very curious and still wants to dissect the scenes and get everything out of the scene that he possibly can.”

Costner’s stoic performance as the complex and grizzled land owner John Dutton may not be the heart of Yellowstone, but it certainly lends the series the crucial grit it needs as a dark modern Western.

Moreover, his performance floored viewers in the latest instalment, which concluded with a devastating attack on John and his family.

As the lives of the Duttons hang in the balance in between seasons, it will undoubtedly be Costner’s central performance that brings most of Yellowstone’s millions of viewers back for season four.

Finally, Grimes added: “You never know if someone of that stature if they are still going to love the work the way that they did when they first started, and he really seems to.”

Thankfully, Kevin Costner has remained just as enthusiastic about his role on Yellowstone well into its third season.

Although John Dutton is hoped to survive the attacks, there’s still a chance the series will have to say goodbye to its biggest star when the series finally returns later this year.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in 2021 on Paramount.
