The third season of the wildly popular modern Western built to a devastating crescendo last Sunday. With John Dutton left bleeding on the side of the road and two of his children potentially dead, Yellowstone fans have been hard at work trying to figure out who might have ordered the fatal hit on Dutton ranch.
Several crazy theories have already been concocted by Yellowstone’s fans after being stunned by the shocking events of the season three finale.
In a heart-stopping conclusion, ranch-owner John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) is struck down by an unknown assassin, his heart shielded by his conveniently placed mobile phone.
Meanwhile, his daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) is presumed dead after an explosive was delivered at her office, and Kayce’s (Luke Grimes) fate is left ambiguous, as he was last seen defending himself from approaching gunmen.
Dutton Ranch has faced a number of threats over the years, including the arrival of rival landowner Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway) in season three.
However, no ploy to take over the USA’s biggest contiguous ranch has been quite so fatal as the latest attack on John’s family in the final moments of last week’s finale.
Many fans are convinced the Dutton’s new opponent Roarke is the most likely suspect, and will be revealed as John’s would-be killer when Yellowstone season four is eventually released.
Paramount have yet to renew the series for another instalment, but all signs are pointing towards the show continuing as each episode has pulled in millions of viewers who are all eager to see what’s next for John’s coveted ranch.
Immediately after episode ten, The World Is Purple, was released, most fingers were pointing at Roarke as the most likely candidate to be revealed as the Dutton’s murderous rival.
Alternatively, other viewers are convinced Jamie Dutton’s (Wes Bentley) reunion with his biological father will come into play in a major way when Yellowstone returns.
In the penultimate episode, Meaner Than Evil, Jamie finally confronted his family history by coming face-to-face with his biological father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton).
Some fans are certain the father-son reunion will have severe repercussions for the Duttons, as Jamie continues to distance himself from his family.
Redditor BigSkySoHigh63 proposed: “I think Jamie’s biological dad set up the hit on John. The junker van seems like it would fit.”

“And they talked about taking over the empire that is Yellowstone – by killing the king.”
Not only did Jamie discover he was adopted, but he also found out Garrett was charged for first-degree murder for killing his wife, Phyllis.
Garrett said: “Your mother sold her body for drugs, and I killed her for it. That’s who you are. That’s where you come from.”
His criminal past was not only a crushing realisation for the adopted Jamie, but could also set Garret Randall up as another potential villain for season four.
This viewer suggested Randall could have set up the hit on John to move in on his territory, but also proposed the hit on Beth and Kayce could have been unconnected.
They continued: “I think the siblings were Roarke, probably because they seemed more like how they’d handle a ‘Yemen oil deal’ like Roarke and Willa discussed after Beth planted that story.”
Yellowstone is hoped to continue next summer, pending the changeable situation surrounding COVID-19, so fans have plenty of time to get their theories straight before the big reveal.
Yellowstone season 3 is available to watch on Paramount.
