Emmy Raver-Lampman plays Allison Hargreeves — better known as “The Rumor — in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. During the press tour for season 1, Raver-Lampman actually predicted what would happen to her character in The Umbrella Academy‘s yet-to-be-confirmed sophomore season.
[Spoiler Alert: Spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy Season 1 & 2.]
Allison Hargreeves is “The Rumor”
As one of the seven Hargreeves super siblings, Allison has extraordinary power. She can “rumor” her enemies to do anything she wants, whether that’s to kill their own brother or punch themselves in the face.
Throughout season 1, fans learned how Allison used her powers to gain everything she had in life, including her fame, husband, and daughter. When Allison lost the ability to use her powers at the hands of her sister, Vanya (Ellen Page), she is forced to learn other methods of communication and, ultimately, other ways to fight for the greater good.
Allison barely used her powers in season 1 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’
Knowing what Allison was capable of, many fans were excited to see her use her powers.
Unfortunately, that’s not what happened.
That’s because Allison’s powers were what she felt destroyed her life. After rumoring her daughter to go to sleep, Allison’s husband separated from her, taking custody of their child.
This forced Allison to come to terms with everything she rumored in her life. Sadly, that was most of her fame and success, as well as many of her relationships.
Later, in season 1’s “I Heard a Rumor,” Allison lost her powers altogether. After trying to get Vanya away from her boyfriend, Leonard (John Magaro)— an evil psychopath who sought to destroy the Umbrella Academy — a frustrated Vanya cut Allison’s throat with her violin bow.
Fortunately, Allison lived, but she could not speak and, therefore, was unable to use her powers.
Emmy Raver-Lampman predicted Allison would get to rediscover her ability
After a season of fearing her power and being unable to use it, Raver-Lampman was excited about the prospect of getting picked up for a second season. She wanted the opportunity to play Allison using her ability!
“First and foremost, I’d like [Allison] to talk again,” she told Tribute Movies, laughing. “We are all a family of superheroes. Allison spent an entire season not using her power. I think I would love to deep dive into what her rediscovering her power [looks like].”
Allison did get to use her powers in season 2 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’
Throughout season 2, fans learned Allison couldn’t speak for a year after landing in Dallas, 1961. Eventually, she regained her vocal ability, but she remained hesitant about using her powers until episode 6.
“I think getting to see Allison kind of use her powers, kind of for the first time, but also kind of in a way that’s like still unhealthy, was unexpected and satisfying,” Raver-Lampman said during a Television Critics Association panel. “I think this is how she’s been using her powers her whole life. And, I think she’s trying to move away from that. But, I think for that moment she falls back into her old self and is showing off for Raymond.”
