Star Wars fans were introduced to some exciting new characters and even a couple of familiar faces when The Mandalorian returned to Tatooine for its second season premiere. Streaming service Disney Plus have reported record numbers of viewers tuned in to see Mando and Baby Yoda’s highly anticipated comeback.
The first season of The Mandalorian proved to be a smash hit when Star Wars’ first live-action series debuted Stateside in November 2019.
After its US premiere, the series was made available worldwide earlier in 2020, with a second season soon following.
Thanks to Pedro Pascal’s watchable performance as the titular bounty hunter, as well as the masterclass in puppeteering to bring the Child (aka Baby Yoda) to life, the series has breathed new life into the Star Wars franchise.
Now, Disney Plus have reported the second season of The Mandalorian is already breaking records after the release of Chapter Nine: The Marshal.
Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood) guest starred in this rip-roaring Tatooine adventure, which also seemingly confirmed the return of fan favourite Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison).
The release of any Star Wars-related media is bound to attract the attention of millions of global fans.
However, the franchise recently experienced a slump following the release of disappointing threequel, The Rise of Skywalker.
Thankfully, it seems sci-fi and fantasy aficionados have now regained their faith in the world of Jedis and bounty hunters with the return of The Mandalorian.
Streaming search engine Reelgood have confirmed the first episode of season two took 5.7% of the streaming share for its opening weekend.
This marks a significant bump up from The Mandalorian’s share at the start of its first season, taking it to the third spot in Reelgood’s analysis of popular shows from 2019-2020.
Although it still hasn’t surpassed the popularity of Amazon’s second season of The Boys or Stranger Things 3 on Netflix, there are still seven episodes left of the new slate.
Moreover, the apparent return of Boba Fett in the latest episode’s stinger will hopefully ensure The Mandalorian will retain its hefty viewership as the season progresses.

Plus, Star Wars fans are eager to keep tuning in, as another franchise favourite, Ahsoka Tano, is rumoured to be making her live action debut on the series this year.
The Mandalorian’s rise in viewership in season two was most likely helped by a reported rise in Disney Plus members.
The service reported it had surpassed 60 million streamers back in August, smashing its target by four years.
As the coronavirus reached the peak of its first wave back in March and April, streaming platforms saw an upswing as households signed up for entertainment to keep them occupied at home.
With both the UK and US, among other territories, continuing to implement measures to handle the pandemic, it’s safe to assume TV fans will be keeping hold of their current subscriptions.
Now The Mandalorian has revived the Star Wars mythos for multiple generations for a second time, its new season is expected to become the biggest hit of 2020’s winter schedule.
Chapter ten, The Confrontation, will air this Friday, and fans will be pleased to know a third season is already in development.
The Mandalorian airs Fridays on Disney Plus.
