The Chase fans were left appalled during Tuesday's episode of the hit ITV game show, as one player appeared to boldly insult The Governess, AKA Anne Hegerty.

As presenter Bradley Walsh quizzed Alan on who he would like to face, Alan mentioned Shaun Wallace as being one of the best performers – but mistakenly labelled him 'Shaun the Chaser'.

And he continued to put his foot in it as he explained his reasoning behind the choice.

"I think the only chance I've got is if they stumble a bit, so I'd rather face Mark or Anne," Alan explained.

"Make your mind up!" Bradley chastised him.

And when it was revealed that he would be squaring up against Anne, she had clearly taken some offence to his assessment.

"You did imply I might be one of the easier Chasers to beat," she said

"Did I?" Alan kidded. "I don't recall."

And Bradley cheekily chimed in: "You did! In fact, I think you said rubbish, totally rubbish. Can't quiz for toffee!"

Fans were similarly appalled at his confidence, and flocked to Twitter in droves to share their incredulity, with one writing: "I'm pleased that it's Anne, she's one of my favourite Chasers. She ain't easy though Alan!"

Another said: "Anne rarely ever stumbles!"

"Take him down, Anne!" another urged.

Alan did make it through to the Final Chase – but two of his fellow players were caught out by Anne.

Later, Alan begrudgingly backtracked: "Anne is on form today," as he recommended another player opt for the middle offer rather than going high.

Others were more concerned about his labelling Shaun ‘The Chaser’ rather than his true quiz moniker The Dark Destroyer.

"Shaun the chaser they are all chasers Alan!" one giggled, while another penned: "Shaun, the Chaser" with a row of cry-laughing emojis.

"They're all chasers mate!" someone else posted.

Anne also debuted a new hairstyle on the show, and viewers were definitely impressed by her transformation as she showed off her slightly longer locks.

"Ooh @anne_hegerty, your hair looks SMASHING today!" one eager fan penned on social media.

Someone else said: "Anne looks good today."

And a third posted: "Really liking @anne_hegerty's new, softer hairstyle for #TheChase."
