Even as the greater DC Extended Universe continues on, fans can’t wait to see Robert Pattinson in his Batsuit. Sure, The Batman already revealed a minute-long bit of test footage featuring the new costume and score music.
But other than that, writer/director Matt Reeves’ movie remains very much a mystery. Now some new fan art attempts to imagine what some of The Batman’s villains will look like.
‘The Batman’ will introduce several classic supervillains
In introducing a whole new take on Gotham City, The Batman doesn’t seem interested in walking audiences through. Rather, the movie sounds like it will dive headfirst into the Batman mythos. For example, several popular villains will appear in the movie.
Zoe Kravitz was among the first to join the cast as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman. Then Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, and John Turturro signed on as the Riddler, the Penguin, and mob boss Carmine Falcone, respectively. A recent rumor even claimed the movie would tease Joker’s appearance in the sequels.
However, fans still don’t know which, if any, of these characters will be The Batman’s main villain. Moreover, with so many different interpretations of these baddies over the years, few know how Reeves’ movie will adapt them to live-action yet again.

Fans are curious what Colin Farrell will look like as the Penguin
Artist Will Gray took his best shot with a couple of The Batman‘s villains. On his Instagram page, he’s been posting a ton of fan art centering on the movie. Among his work are images of Dano as the Riddler and Farrell as the Penguin.
For Dano’s Riddler, Gray put the actor in the character’s signature green suit, tie, and hat. Plus, he added a cane inspired by the Batman: The Telltale Series video games. Previous efforts have remained fairly true to traditional designs.
But Gray’s work on Farrell is even more interesting. The Batman is unlikely to draw from Danny DeVito’s more offbeat design in 1992’s Batman Returns, despite Reeve’s affection for it. So Gray has taken several attempts at predicting how the character might look in his next appearance.
One depicts Farrell’s Penguin in a top hat, fur-collared coat, and bow tie. Another draws from the comics’ Emperor Penguin, a completely different character in the comics. And Gray’s most recent features an intimidating –and unrecognizable — version of Farrell’s criminal kingpin.

Audiences will meet Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight in 2021
For now, all fans can do is speculate about what The Batman might look like. The movie’s production was, of course, put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. And its release too was pushed back from June 25, 2021 to Oct. 1, 2021.
Gray’s work isn’t only a testament to his artistic talent. It also proves how much Batman characters like the Penguin have changed over the years. Even though fans don’t know what to expect, they remain hopeful Reeves will deliver a Gotham they’ve never seen before.
