'Supernatural' Prequel: 10 Old Characters We'd Love to See in the New Series

With news about the Supernatural prequel capturing fans’ imaginations, it is inevitable to have a character wish list. Sam and Dean Winchester will not be the stars, but their parents will be, leading longtime viewers to examine the Winchester bloodline and timelines.

Mary (Samantha Smith) and John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) had a life before and after bringing Dean and Sam into the world, and it’s one filled with love, hunts, family, and chaos. With that in mind, here’s an idea of who could possibly pop up in the new TV show, and it would make perfect sense.

Henry Winchester

John Winchester didn’t grow up with his dad around, but as he, Sam, and Dean later learned, it’s because Henry Winchester was part of the Men of Letters. His exploits with the legacy gang had him face Abaddon, the demon who took him out and tried to kill Sam and Dean.

What if there’s a way to show Henry’s part of the story while telling John’s? Though John took up hunting after losing Mary, the Winchesters have an extensive history with the celestial and paranormal world. Angels, Men of Letters, and Cain and Abel are part of that paternal line. And Henry Winchester is a huge part of that.

Samuel Campbell

The boys’ maternal grandfather Samuel Campbell played a major role in later seasons of Supernatural, and he’s had scenes with Sam, Dean, Mary, and John.

At one point, viewers learned that Samuel’s grandfather knew the cure for vampirism. Samuel’s expert occult knowledge can easily feed into the new show’s storylines, especially his legends about the all-powerful colt that could kill everything except for five things.

Bobby Singer

Fans know that Bobby and John met at some point during Dean and Sam’s childhood, but did Mary know him too? Remember, the Campbells were hunters for hundreds of years — well before John came along — and Mary knew the life. It’s possible they knew a younger Bobby too.

Azazel

Exactly how long did Yellow Eyes have his sights set on Mary, and why? He’s such a large piece of Supernatural lore and impacted at least two generations of Winchesters. He killed John when he possessed Samuel, but what’s the real deal? Perhaps there’s a way to weave in details about his origin and that deal he made with Mary. There’s also the possibility that other familiar demon faces enter the picture with Azazel.

Archangel Michael

OG fans know that Dean and other Winchesters before him were vessels for archangel Michael. But this angel also popped up around 1978 when Anna tried to kill John and Mary to prevent the apocalypse. How many interactions did he have with the Winchesters in their main timeline and others? Any version of Michael would be interesting.

The Harvelles

Fans got to know Ellen and Jo Harvelle who ran the Roadhouse seen in season 2. It was a hunter’s haven and both ladies were fond of Sam and Dean. Ellen knew John back in the day through her husband Bill who died during a hunt with him. Why not bring all three Harvelles into the prequel at some point?

Sam and Dean

Hear this out. Remember the episode where Dean met his dad in 1973? He’s the one who advised him to buy the Impala (as Dean Van Halen), and it’s been in the family since. Perhaps a quick cameo from John’s future sons is a doable option. After all, time travel is big for Mary and the Campbells as well as the mysterious Men of Letters.
