Richard Madeley asks Lindsay Hoyle for mouse help
Citizens are being invited to pledge allegiance to King Charles III during his Coronation, which is being held in Westminster Abbey, on Saturday.
Archbishop Justin Welby will invite “all those who desire” to swear their allegiance to the new monarch during the ceremony.
He will call upon people to “make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted King, defender of all”.
While the pledge is optional it was debated on Tuesday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain by hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley who were joined by Princess Diana’s former private secretary Patrick Jephsen.
Patrick admitted: “It’s not a personal thing Richard, it just feels to me unBritish.”
Richard agreed as Patrick added: “It feels divisive, from now on, ‘Did you take it? Didn’t you?’ Immediately we’re on a divided foot. It’s not really very unified.”
Richard shared: “It’s also a bit embarrassing, isn’t it? To sit in your lounge and say to the telly.”
Patrick concluded: “There are already thousands of people who serve the Crown without having to take any fancy oath of allegiance, they just get on with it.”
The debate divided viewers, with many voicing their opinions about the pledge on social media.
