James Valdez famously departed from the USA Network crime drama after his loyalty was questioned in season three. However, his unexpected comeback in the finale of Queen of the South season has caused a stir amongst the fanbase, with some viewers hoping he won’t be sticking around for much longer.

Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) has developed into one of the most successful and feared drug lords throughout the first four seasons of Queen of the South.

The USA Network series airs around the world on Netflix, and has become an international hit, filling the void left by cartel dramas like Breaking Bad and Narcos.

Season four ended last year, and concluded with the surprise return of James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) who left Teresa’s team after a heated exchange in season three.

Although his shocking comeback stunned Queen of the South fans, other viewers were not quite so excited.

Following James’s exit, season four put the spotlight firmly on Teresa’s development as a one of the USA’s most respected drug traffickers.

Last year, and when the new season was also added to Netflix, viewers tuned in eagerly to see Teresa strike new deals with the Russian mob and expand her operation in New Orleans.

She also faced off against a new rival, Judge Lafayette (David Andrews), who is determined to stamp out the new product flooding the streets of his town.

However, James’s arrival, clutching a nasty bulletwound and fleeing from unknown assailants, threatened to bring Teresa’s character development to a grinding hope.

Season five has been confirmed to be in the works, although it may be some time before Braga and the cast can return to set due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

When the series eventually continues, a vocal minority has called for James’s appearance to be limited to a brief guest spot, so as to not distract from Teresa’s ongoing arc.

One fan took to Reddit to propose the idea after feeling disappointed by the sudden twist in last year’s finale.

Redditor bubblelover98 posted: “This might be an unpopular opinion but I thought season four was actually the best one yet!”

“They finally got rid of Camila and annoying Isabella, and Teresa had to face things on her own – yes, she made the absolute worst decisions but that’s what made it more funny to be honest.”

Teresa struck out on her own in the latest season, although her efforts produced mixed results as this Queen of the South enthusiast admitted.

However, bringing James back could threaten Teresa’s individuality after the show delivered some of her best moments in the latest instalment.

The fan continued: “I really can’t be bothered for James to come back, start questioning her again, making out with her and then eventually killing him off towards the end, making a deal about it.”

Most fans are agreed Teresa and James will start up their steamy romance again, though this could become quite tedious if more relationship drama fills up the bulk of season five.

As this viewer remarked, more trouble in paradise could be “boring and a waste of a season!”

They went on: “I think the chapter with him is over and I’d much rather he left the show for good now rather than later.”

Alice Braga’s central performance has made the show more thrilling than ever over the past season, so it would be a shame if Teresa Mendoza was forced to step aside to make way for James’s screen time.

Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
