Pirates of the Caribbean sailed into cinemas in 2003 and collected a hefty box office. The unexpected blockbuster hit took home $654, making it an unprecedented success for the new franchise. This success was mostly built upon Johnny Depp’s esoteric and almost ethereal performance of Captain Jack Sparrow. The character was famously based upon a cross between Keith Richards and Pepe le Pew, making him stand out from the other characters at the time. Despite Depp’s undoubted effect on the series, it sounds like he might not be returning to the series.
Earlier this year Depp was involved in a legal battle against a British newspaper over “abuse” claims.
This public high court case saw his private life being laid bare, including testimonies from his ex-wife Amber Heard.
With this extremely public event making headlines, it has been heavily rumours that Disney have since dropped Depp from his flagship franchise.
Since then, the rumours have been swirling online that Depp’s Jack Sparrow will be replaced with a new actor.
Earlier this year reports surfaced that Zac Efron could be the man for the job.
However the interesting piece of information is that Efron may not be playing a brand new character, but could be playing Jack Sparrow himself.
Of course, Efron could not simply replace Depp in the next follow-up movie as there is a 24-year age gap between the two actors.
It would be much more likely that Efron could be playing a younger version of Jack Sparrow in a prequel film.
Disney already showed off the cunning nature of Jack Sparrow in his youth during the fifth Pirates film, Salazar’s Revenge.
But detailing the true nature of the swashbuckler’s early days on the Black Pearl may give the House of Mouse a new avenue to venture down without Depp attached to it.
Other notable prequel films from Disney include Monsters University, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Bambi II, so it is certainly in their wheelhouse already.
Fans will simply have to wait and see – but in the mean time it has now been confirmed that Margot Robbie will be starring in an upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean film.

The Australian actor was rumoured to be joining the franchise in some capacity earlier this year – either in the mainline Pirates of the Caribbean 6, or a spin-off film.
During an interview earlier this month, Robbie outed the rumours as truth while promising “lots of girl power” in her upcoming role.
She went on to reveal Birds of Prey director Christina Hudson was also involved in the project.
The 30-year-old said: “It’s too early to talk about it. I love Christina, obviously.”
Robbie continued: “I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process.
“We’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding, obviously, a very key female element to that world.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available to watch on Disney Plus now.
