The first details about the upcoming release of Outlander season six have been revealed, including a fresh look at Claire (played by Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Diehard fans of the Starz series and Diana Gabaldon’s original novels were concerned by one of the show’s updates, but showrunner Matthew B Roberts has explained why there’s no cause for alarm.

Season six of Outlander will comprise just seven episodes when it returns at the start of 2022.

Following an even lengthier period of ‘Droughtlander’ than usual, the decades-spanning romantic drama will return almost two years after the latest instalment wrapped on Starz.

The series was sadly hit hard by the unexpected limitations presented by the still ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Thankfully, production kicked into gear at the start of this year and filming for season six came to an end last week.

However, some fans were concerned by the latest updates, which confirmed the next outing will be significantly shorter than usual.

Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts explained: “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges.

“[This] led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.”

A seven episode run will be significantly shorter than what Outlander fans have gotten used to over the years.

The adventures of Claire and Jamie began back in 2014 with an enthralling debut season of 16 episodes, which aired in two blocks of eight.

Subsequent instalments have all been either 12 or 13 episodes in length.

No specific release date has been set for the next season, but it looks like the series will only be back on screens for a couple of months before the wait for Outlander to return starts all over again.

Thankfully, it seems post-production is already making good headway, as Roberts revealed more.

He said: “We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser’s Ridge.”

Plus, the showrunner also announced some surprising details about Outlander’s continuation to placate potential concerns around a shortened sixth season.

Roberts added: “Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season 7 with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”

Meanwhile, Sam Heughan’s official Instagram page also revealed an exciting development about the season six premiere.

He posted: “We have an extended length first ep for you too.

“This season will be 8eps with an extended season 7….Much to celebrate!”

While Outlander won’t be on screens for quite as long this time round, viewers can look forward to sitting down for a whopping 90 minute premiere when the drama returns next year.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
