Meghan Markle's luxurious baby shower arranged by close friend Jessica Mulroney in New York was declared a "common" affair by palace aides behind the scenes, according to friend of Meghan and Prince Harry Omid Scobie.

The journalist and correspondent has been a close source to the couple and wrote the unofficial biography Finding Freedom.

During a new Channel 4 documentary called A Very Royal Baby: From Cradle to Crown, which covered all of the Royal Family and their pregnancy choices, Omid revealed the palace hadn’t been keen on the Duchess of Sussex’s decision to jet off back to the US.

For one thing, the concept of a baby shower is considered an American one – an event where guests shower the mum-to-be with gifts and the host plans a series of fun pregnancy and baby-themed games.

Omid conceded that the idea of a baby shower was “as far from British tradition as you can get”, and that aides actually called the event “common”.

The royal reporter claimed: "I remember speaking to a palace aide at the time who rolled their eyes.

"They were horrified that something so common was happening within the House of Windsor."

Ingrid Seward, a royal author, then called the whole celebration “trashy”.

"They walked in through the front entrance carrying these enormous bags from the most expensive shops in New York,” she continued.

"Crowds gathered because they were all celebrities, there was Gayle King from CBS, Serena Williams and Amal Clooney. "

Omid also shared comments from a senior palace aide in the Finding Freedom book.

"It's fair to say that the optics of the somewhat flashy shower did not go down well with certain individuals at the Palace,” he recalled the un-named source saying.

"Meghan was often criticised for being too Hollywood, meaning too flashy.

“Especially for the reserved aesthetic of the monarchy,” they added.

Meghan and Harry recently celebrated their son Archie’s second birthday in California, as the royal couple gear up to welcome their daughter into the world this summer.
