Loose Women's Andrea McLean opens up about nervous breakdown

Loose Women’s Andrea McLean has revealed she suffered a mental breakdown last year.

As the ITV show returned for the first time in six weeks, the presenter opened up about her ordeal which led her to a ‘really dark place’ and explained that if the coronavirus pandemic had taken place at that time, it would have been ‘horrendous’ for her.

Speaking to co-stars Brenda Edwards and Nadia Sawalha, while Coleen Nolan joined from her kitchen at home, Andrea disclosed: ‘If this [pandemic] had happened a year ago I would have been in trouble.

‘Last year, I was in a really dark place. I had a breakdown last year, which is something I haven’t necessarily spoken about, but I did.

‘If it had happened then it would have been horrendous, but I worked on myself so hard and I had so much help and so much support that actually when it happened, we’d already starting calming our life down.’

She continued: ‘I was in a really great place mentally [at the beginning of lockdown], I’d had therapy, so actually I was quite chilled.’

Loose Women is back to airing daily, however, there have been adjustments in filming to adhere to social distancing restrictions.

A statement from ITV read: ‘Adhering to all of the necessary social distancing requirements, there will be some adjustments to the broadcast of Loose Women during this first phase of returning to air.

‘Three women will be in the studio with one panellist joining via video link. There will also be some pre recorded shows across the week in addition to live shows on Mondays and Wednesdays to limit the footfall at the studios.’

Loose Women editor Sally Shelford said: ‘At Loose Women we have made it our mission to stop the stigma and start a conversation about mental health, covering issues from postnatal depression to anxiety and addiction.

‘With many of our viewers struggling with lockdown, speaking openly and honestly about mental health worries to offer comfort and advice has never felt more important.’

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
