Kate Garraway’s Good Morning Britain co-host Ben Shephard gave viewers a heartbreaking update on her husband’s condition today revealing he is in a coma and it is “really tough” for Kate and her children Darcey, 14, and William, 10. Kate is not allowed to visit her husband in hospital but has been able to communicate with him via nurses caring for him.

After Kate and her children were seen clapping for carers yesterday evening, Ben and co-star Charlotte Hawkins revealed how tough things really were for their colleague.

Ben explained: “She’s wanted to share the fact that she’s been able to speak with Derek in the evenings in a coma.

“We had some guests on last week who said then, and I think a lot of hospitals are doing this, they’re offering families the chance to speak to loved ones who can’t respond because they’re in comas.

“But she’s been able to share music with him, talk to him and support him.”

As Kate cannot sit by her husband’s side due to restrictions in place to stop the spread of Covid-19, nurses are helping relatives organise phone calls so they can speak with one another.

“It’s so important, normally you’d be there,” Charlotte commented. “It must be so hard for the families not being able to be there and not being able to see their loved ones.”

Ben explained when Kate speaks to her husband, she is passing on well wishes from viewers and fans.

“She’s been able to pass these messages you’ve sent her onto Derek.

“She can’t respond to everybody as much as she wants to… the messages are really helping.”

The Tipping Point presenter added: “It’s tough, it’s really, really tough because he’s critically ill.”

Dr Hilary also sent a message of support, remarking: “Kate has been incredibly strong, she sends her love to everyone else whose loved ones are critical as well.

“Everybody sends love and support to her.”

Yesterday evening Kate gave her own update on her Instagram page alongside a video of her clapping for carers with her children.

She wrote: “Another emotional #clapthecarers & never has it been more needed.

“If this pandemic #lockdown is dragging on for us, imagine what it is like for them.

“Shift after endlessly long shift, bravely going to work, to battle the virus and give our loved ones a chance.

“None of those keeping my Derek alive have ever made me feel it’s a chore, they want to win this as much as I want them to, but it must be so hard.”

Kate added of Derek: “He is still critically ill in intensive care, but where there is life there is hope.

“Thank you #nhs from the bottom of my heart.”
