Grantchester is finally returning to ITV at 9pm and will continue to explore the friendship between Geordie Keating (played by Robson Green) and Will Davenport (Tom Brittany), with the stars behind the characters sharing a similar bond off camera. Much of the plot of the new season is being kept under wraps, but the stars did reveal what filming on season six was like. Express.co.uk has the chance to speak with Brittany and Green ahead of season six.

Grantchester is loved by fans for the bonds between the characters on screen, with Geordie and Will’s friendship at the heart of the show.

The chemistry the two stars share on-screen is undeniable, with Will and Geordie developing their friendship since season four.

Will was introduced back in the fourth season and since then the character has gone from strength to strength as he has grown and changed over the last two seasons.

He is set to do the same in season six, with Will now eager to dive into his work and open himself up to new challenges.

He will be introduced to a new, potential, relationship, one that will tear him away from his work.

Geordie is dealing with his own problems in season six, as he is still reluctant over some of the changes coming to the town.

Yet, it will be a major controversy in the village that once again brings the two friends together as it tests their beliefs.

This looks set to inevitably lead to the two coming to blows as their friendship is put to the ultimate test, something the stars behind the characters admitted was difficult to film.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other outlets, Brittany opened up about some of the more challenging moments in filming season six.

“Because we’re such best mates in real life, like our characters,” Brittany explained, “a couple of things happen that really threatened to tear our friendship apart.

“So, I think the most challenging thing was to have scenes erupt and where, where maybe our friendship, it wasn’t so good, and there are bits where we become quite distant from each other.

What these scenes are remain to be seen, but there will be eight episodes in the latest season to see them in.

Brittany continued: “So I guess it was challenging in a way but I remember there was one scene where we were rehearsing.

“It’s quite a tough scene, and both [Robson Green] and I were crying like tearing up feeling sorry for our characters.

“We weren’t speaking to each other properly anymore, and I was like, oh no, I want us to be friends again!”

Since Will entered the series as the wide-eyed village vicar, he and Geordie quickly bonded over their similarities and, of course, differences.

Green went into detail about this, how it is the differences between the two characters that adds so much tension to season six.

“ [The] age difference is quite an interesting part that’s played out that I only tend to realise that Will is that, kind of, the son I never had,” the actor said.

“But also what [Geordie] went through in the war, [Will] doesn’t understand and you know he believes in marching for peace whereas I see the world as it is.

Season seven has also been confirmed by ITV, with production on the seventh season already underway, inevitably leading to a shorter break between seasons this time around.

Grantchester season 6 premieres tonight, Friday, September 3, at 9pm on ITV.
