Gogglebox Stephens mum Pat returns to show after new Boris Johnson announcement

Gogglebox viewers witnessed the return of Stephen Webb's mum Pat on Friday evening.

Pat was a quick addition to the show by producers following Prime Minister Boris Johnson's announcement earlier on in the day.

Mr Johnson confirmed the lockdown lifting plans for May 17, including allowing customers back inside pubs and relatives and friends allowed to hug and kiss, would go ahead in a Downing Street conference at 5.30pm tonight.

Gogglebox producers got the news into the latest edition of the Chanel 4 show with a quick phone call from show favourite Stephen to his mum Pat, who used to appear in the show with him.

Pat popped up in the opening of tonight's show in a touching phone call with her son.

Talking about the news that people are allowed to hug and kiss their relatives from May 17 after Boris Johnson's confirmation today, he said: "I can't wait…I haven't had a cuddle or kiss from you for over a year now.

"And we always have a kiss don't we?"

"More than that," she replied.

Pat's surprise appearance on the show didn't go unnoticed by viewers.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: "Bring back Pat."

Another added: "Mummy Pat."

A third person wrote: 'Yes Pat."

"Stephen & his mum used to be so funny when they were on together! #Gogglebox", a fourth added.

"Stephen's mum sounded like Rylan's mum #Gogglebox." a fifth posted.

Stephen's mother Pat took over from Chris Butland-Steed, who Stephen was originally cast with for the show.

The pair were a firm fixture on Gogglebox since series one, having also been in a relationship off screen.

But having split up, the pair found it difficult to work together and therefore Chris left the show.

Stephen now shares the sofa with his husband Daniel Lustig-Webb who was quickly taken to heart by fans of the show, as well as their prized pooches Betsy, Babs and Princess.

Gogglebox viewers were left heartbroken on Friday as stars Jenny Newby and Lee Riley confirmed it was the last week of filming.

In a video posted on their joint Instagram page, Lee said: "Happy Friday everybody," but Jenny said, "and sad Friday".
