Silent Witness is due to hit our screens shortly with it’s 25th season. To celebrate a quarter of a century of the iconic show, we thought we’d rummage through the archives and take a look back at all the famous faces who have guest starred in it over the years.
From Idris Elba to Jodie Comer, Daisy Ridley to Martin Compston – many of our most-loved actress have experienced a day or two on the set of Silent Witness.
So, as we prepare to watch Amanda Burton reprise the iconic Dr Sam Ryan after an 18-year break, here’s a little treat for fans to sink their teeth into

Award winning actor Idris Elba appeared in Silent Witness back in 1997 as a character called Charlie. He’s now better known for series such as Luther, In The Long Run, and The Wire. Idris has also appeared in movies such as The Suicide Squad and The Mountain Between Us.
In 2002, a twenty-something Benedict Cumberbatch starred as Warren Reid. It was the dawn of an illustrious career that’s seen the actor play iconic roles such as Doctor Strange and Sherlock Holmes. Fun fact, Benedict voiced evil dragon Smaug in The Hobbit movies
This astounding actor is best-known for his role in the spine-tingling thriller Get Out. Since then he went on to win an Oscar, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe and SAG award for Best Supporting Actor for his work on Judas and the Black Messiah. Before all that he starred as Errol Harris in a 2008 episode of Silent Witness.
Best known for her stint in the Star Wars franchise, Daisy Ridley appeared in silent Witness in 2014 as Hannah Kennedy.
At just nine years old, Nicholas Hoult starred in Silent Witness as a young boy names Tom Evans. He went on to play antagonist Tony in the TV series Skins and later became known for his work in the X-Men franchise as Hank McCoy and other TV shows such as The Great and Crossing Swords
At 18, Tamsin Egerton starred as Hannah Duncan in Silent Witness. The popular actress later went on to star in films like St Trinian’s and Chalet Girl.
In 2015, Jason Watkins appeared in Silent Witness as Stan Hughes. Prior to that he was in The Bill and has since starred in Line of Duty, The Crown and McDonal & Dodds.
Emily Mortimer worked on Silent Witness twice in 1996. Once as a character called Fran and another appearance that was uncredited. She later won an award for her performance in the 2001 film Lovely and Amazing and went on to star as Mackenzie McHale in HBO’s The Newsroom.
The BAFTA-winning Killing Eve actress starred in Silent Witness when she was just 19 years old. Ironically, she played a character called Eve Gilston in the show. She later went on to appear in shows like Casualty, Law & Order and Vera before taking on her much-loved role as Villanelle.
From Line of Duty, to Vigil, to Our House… Martin Compston has been a familiar face on our screens for the last few years and has starred in some cracking TV shows. In 2014 he also appeared in Silent Witness, donning a police badge once more as DS Jason Ross.
