Emmerdale’s Reece Dinsdale returning as director as Paul is killed off

Emmerdale star Reece Dinsdale has confirmed he's not going anywhere – despite his character Paul Ashdale being killed off.

Paul, who has been seriously beating him his son Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) for the past few months, met his grisly end during tonight's (April 1) hour-long episode.

However Reece has revealed he won't be leaving the Emmerdale set – and that he was actually already there when he got the role as Paul.

Speaking about his exit, Reece said: "I was actually directing on Emmerdale when I was asked, right out of the blue, if I would like to play Paul.

"I'm delighted to announce, therefore, that I shall begin directing once again on the show in a couple of weeks time.

"I'm the cat that got the cream!"

Reece worked closely with Lisa Riley and Bradley Johnson, who played his on-screen family Mandy Dingle and Vinny Dingle.

Of course, he won't get to be on screen with them anymore, but he'll still see them around the Yorkshire-based set.

He said he'd miss the duo "desperately", adding: "They made me so very welcome from the off, and that never changed.

"We worked hard and laughed a lot.

"I will still be working with them, just in a different capacity.

"Boy, am I going to crack that whip!"

And it sounds like he's more than happy to be sticking around, as he described the soap as a "fabulous big family".

"[My last day] was actually filmed in sequence, for once, and was my death day in the hospital," he said, speaking of his final scenes.

"It was very moving… and kind things were said to me that shall remain with me forever.

"What a fabulous big family the Emmerdale team are!"

Actor Reece doesn't have the best of luck when it comes to soaps, as his Coronation Street character was also killed off.

He played Michelle Keegan's on-screen dad Joe McIntyre, who tried to fake his own death for an insurance pay-out, before actually dying for real.

In early 2010, Joe was sailing on Lake Windermere but a gust of wind sent him flying overboard and he died.

Paul said: "I thought it might be difficult to top my exit from Corrie where I drowned in Lake Windermere… but maybe we did! I'd say far better than leaving in a taxi."
