After a rough couple of months at the end of last year, the fruit-and-veg stall holder had to come to terms with the prospect of losing wife Stacey.

After finally being freed from the service of Phil and Ben Mitchell, Martin realised he was too late – Stacey had already moved on to another man in his absence.

Martin was thrown together with Ruby by chance when Ian forced him to get involved in his political campaign.

However, when Ian mentioned Stacey, Martin flew into a rage and shared some harsh words with the restaurant owner.

Ruby – who was Stacey’s best friend – then grew concerned for Martin and told him he could stay at her flat.

One thing lead to another when Martin claimed she was the only person in Walford who cared about him and the pair ended up sleeping with each other.

Fans know that Ruby is in a relationship with Max Branning, the man Stacey cheated on Martin with a couple of years ago, which further complicates their twisted romance.

Next week’s episodes of EastEnders will see Ruby impressed when Martin tackles a thief.

She then decides to offer him a job as security at the club.

Might this be the start of an affair – or final rejection for Max?

Jake Wood, who plays Max, spoke to Digital Spy about his relationship with Ruby at the end of last year and said he still has faith in his character’s future with Ruby.

“Max's feelings for Ruby are really genuine – and I think Ruby really likes Max too."

He added: "When Max is good, happy and stable, he's very attentive as a partner and he can be a good support. Ruby is in the process of getting the club and hopefully Max can help there. They're well-matched and a good pairing.

"I've enjoyed working with Louisa too. It's great to have her back in the show. She has a great history in EastEnders after working there when she was younger."
