EastEnders legend Leslie Grantham ‘haunting’ old jail where he served time for murder

EastEnders actor Leslie Gratham is said to have come back from the dead to haunt the prison where he spent time for murder.

The BBC star, who died in 2018 aged 71, is believed to be roaming the corridors of HMP Kingston in Portsmouth.

Urban explorer and paranormal investigator Karl Hassall is convinced that Leslie is behind a series of unusual noises and activity at the compound.

After checking out the venue to get to the bottom of the mystery, Karl said: "It is definitely spooked.

"We heard what sounded like Dirty Den’s voice saying ‘release them’ and ‘search them’.

"I asked ‘is there anyone here with us now’ and got a reply of ‘yeah’."

He added to The Sun on Sunday: "And at one point we heard shouting and laughing down the corridor.

"It was terrifying. Leslie Grantham may have left this world but his spirit is still haunting this prison."

Leslie spent a decade in prison after murdering a cab driver in 1966 during a bungled robbery in Germany.

After leaving prison he trained as an actor before bagging the role of Den Watts in 1985 on Albert Square.

After three years on the soap Den was 'killed off' by bosses, though in 2003 he returned in a major plot twist.

Leslie's second stint on the soap lasted 18 months.

In December Dirty Den's divorce bombshell storyline was voted the best Christmas soap cliffhanger of all time.

On Christmas Day 1986, fans watched as Den handed wife Angie divorce papers.

Over 30 million people are said to have turned in to watch the festive special.

A poll by UKTV’s Drama channel found on average Brits watch six hours a day of TV over Christmas.

Leslie passed away on June 15, 2018, his cause of death as never confirmed though it is thought he had terminal cancer.

A statement from his representative said: "We formally announce the loss of Leslie Grantham, who passed away at 10.20am on the morning of Friday 15th June 2018.

"His ex-wife and sons have asked for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time, and for there to be no approaches to them for information or comment.

"There will be a private funeral which will be attended by close family and friends only."
