DOMINIC West did not bother changing his clothes between getting close to Lily James and then putting on a united front with his wife later.
The Affair star, 50, wore the same shirt, belt and trousers when he was spotted canoodling Lily in Rome and then two days later when facing media with wife Catherine Fitzgerald.
The 50-year-old star had been spotted kissing his 31-year-old co-star Lily on a romantic break in Rome at the weekend.
The pair are starring together in an adaptation of Nancy Mitford's novel The Pursuit Of Love.
On their romantic day, Dominic wore the light blue shirt, dark blue trousers and black belt as they lunched and then jumped on an electric scooter to sightsee around Rome.
They were then spotted at Rome's airport before Dominic made a mad dash home to his wife Catherine to put on a united front for the media.
In the staged photo shoot where the couple issued a statement declaring their "marriage is strong", the only difference in Dominic's outfit was he'd put on a brown winter coat to protect him from the cold.
Fans flocked to Twitter to point out the star was wearing the same clothes.
One Twitter user wrote: "I'm OBSESSED with the Dominic West/Lily James saga. The staged photos. The handwritten note propped up in some shrubs. Dom wearing the same outfit twice."
Another added: "Coming late to that particular party but isn’t Dominic West wearing the same trousers in that awkward photograph as he was in Rome?"
A third said: "Did Dominic West come outside of his house to announce his marriage is ok, wearing the same clothes he was walking around Rome with Lily James in?"
While a fourth commented: "Dominic West at today's press call. He's thrown a brown jacket over his clothes from the weekend."
Catherine may have been smiling sweetly in the couple's photo opportunity yesterday but she "won't take any crap" say friends.
Yesterday's public display of unity came after his steamy clinch with Lily but Catherine is reported to be "privately fuming" at her husband.
"There are some difficult conversations to be had, but those will take place behind closed doors," a friend of the couple told the Daily Mail.
"For now she was happy to display a show of unity and will always put her family first."
Another old acquaintance of the couple said: "I saw those pictures today. I don't know what's going on. Catherine is very direct. There's no nonsense with her.
"She's always been kind and sweet but she doesn't take crap. I think anyone who knows her would say that. She's a very cool person. I just hope she's ok."
Dominic kissed wife Catherine outside their home and insisted they were not splitting up after he was pictured with co-star Lily.
Speaking at their Wiltshire cottage, the actor said: "I just want to say our marriage is strong and we are very much still together.”
However, he did not appear to be wearing his wedding ring and Catherine had her ring finger jammed in her pocket.
The actor's wife, 49, had a tissue in her hand as well as the handwritten note, which he read to the press.
In a staged display of unity, West kissed her – although she kept her hands firmly in her pockets.
The pair, who married in Ireland in 2010, kissed for several seconds as the cameras clicked.
A body language expert dubbed the display a "toe-curling display of denial" with Dominic "arrogant but awkward".
The doorstep kiss was also mocked by fans sharing Little Britain memes.
The Sun Online has contacted Dominic's representative for comment.
West flew home for crisis talks at his £1.8million country cottage last night after the pictures emerged.
He had been snapped stroking James' hair as they enjoyed lunch together and smiling at the brunette beauty before leaning in for a kiss.
They were also seen zipping around Rome together, enjoying the sights by sharing an electric scooter.
He and Catherine share four children – daughter Dora, 13, son Senan, 12, son Francis, 11, and Christabel, seven.
Dominic, who shot to fame playing love rat Noah Solloway in The Affair, was spotted snogging his younger co-star, as well as grabbing her bum, and cuddling up to her on an electric scooter as they took in the sights of the city.
A friend of Catherine's yesterday claimed that they rushed to the West's family home to console the actor's wife who was said to be "devastated".
They explained: "She's totally shocked because she didn't know anything was going on.
"They were very much together, so this is completely out of the blue. She thought they had a good marriage and now it's probably over."
