Disney+ users threaten boycott as dozens of shows axed

The Kardashians: Trailer for season 3 to air on Disney+

Disney+ and Hulu users have threatened to unsubscribe from the platforms en masse after bosses revealed a huge list of shows and movies will be removed.

The streamer will be purging a number of short-lived series from May 26 as part of its latest cost-cutting strategy.

Among the projects set for removal are Marvel shows Project Power and Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever.

Also disappearing from the site are popular dramas The Mysterious Benedict Society, Y: The Last Man, Pistol and Willow.

Plus, a slew of major movies will be axed, from the Cheaper By The Dozen remake starring Zach Braff to the young-adult fantasy blockbuster Artemis Fowl.

Users have already flocked to social media to question the decision, with many threatening to cancel their subscriptions.

Twitter user @3TrackMind79 raged: “WHAT?!?!? We were only halfway through the second season. My daughters LOVE Mysterious Benedict Society!

“@DisneyPlus, what the f**k is wrong with you?!?! Do I need to unsubscribe? Between this and canceling Owl House, you are failing at the one thing you should be good at!”

Disney+’s official helpline account replied: “We’re always working toward making your streaming experience the best it can be, and as this work is done some titles are impacted by removal from our platform. We apologize for the disappointment this may cause.”

To which the user retorted: “Wrong answer. You are pulling shows as a power move to punish the amazing writers who are on strike. This makes my streaming experience SIGNIFICANTLY worse and we won’t give you another penny until these shows are restored. Period.”

Jade Kelly said: “Cancel your subscription to @hulu_support @DisneyPlus. This merger and the removal of good programming will hurt their bottom line.

“Make them listen. Goodbye #Hulu #DisneyPlus You won’t be missed.”

@marr0g said: “This is the kind of thing that prompts people to cancel their Disney+ subscription and just torrent stuff.”

“Disney is just self-destructing by doing things like this,” @annintheuk added. “I would cancel my subscription, but I already did that.”

@NEBowsette tweeted: “Also, gonna cancel my Disney+ subscription. Can’t support something that’s going to dump shows on a whim, ruining any chance of them being archived.”

“Content f*****g impairment,” @newjorg fumed. “@DisneyPlus hates you. Cancel your subscription.”

Viewers were also baffled that the documentary Howard, about the original The Little Mermaid’s lyricist Howard Ashman, will be removed just as the live-action remake hits cinemas.

CFO Christine McCarthy said at this month’s Disney earnings call: “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation.”
