Chicago Fire is one of television’s most popular shows and the first installment of Dick Wolf’s famed Chicago franchise. The action-drama series might focus on the lifesaving work done by firefighters and paramedics, but there is a healthy dose of romance in the mix, as well.
It is that romance that has many fans buzzing, especially in light of recent developments between two of the show’s main characters — Sylvie Brett and Matt Casey.
When did ‘Chicago Fire’ debut on television?
In 2012, viewers were treated to a brand-new type of television series when Chicago Fire debuted. The show, which airs on NBC, uncovers the personal as well as professional lives of a group of firefighters, paramedics, and rescue personnel in the Chicago Fire Department, working out of Engine Company 51; Truck Company 81; Rescue Squad Company 3; Battalion 25 and Ambulance 61.
From infighting and power struggles to intense friendships, it is clear that the group of firefighters is far from perfect — but their common goal remains the same, to save lives and help the community.
Chicago Fire has been honored with numerous awards and nominations over the years, including multiple People’s Choice Award nominations. Critics and fans especially love the intense acting and emotional storylines — in particular, the romantic storylines.
Brett and Casey have a will-they won’t-they relationship
Matt Casey is one of the lead characters in Chicago Fire. Played by popular actor Jesse Spencer, Casey is the Captain at Firehouse 51 and serves as second in command to Battalion Chief Wallace Boden.
In addition to his work with the Fire Department, Casey is a handyman and practices carpentry during his off time. He tends to keep his distance from his teammates, but he is known to be fiercely loyal and trustworthy.
Sylvie Brett, played by Kara Killmer, is one of the resident paramedics. A small-town girl with a checkered romantic history and a habit of dating not-very-eligible men, Brett was engaged to Chaplain Kyle Sheffield from season seven to season eight.
However, after her breakup from Sheffield, Brett set her sights on another candidate, a man with whom she had been experiencing chemistry for some time.
Some fans think that Brett and Casey have no chemistry at all
Over the past couple of seasons, Sylvie Brett and Matt Casey have slowly been progressing in their relationship. All throughout season eight, Brett and Casey started working together a lot more, with many scenes seeming to indicate that the two were beginning to experience feelings for each other.
They also shared a lot of flirtatious moments, leading many viewers to believe that Brett and Casey would be the next big romantic Chicago Fire pairing.
According to MSN, in a recent episode of Chicago Fire, Brett and Casey took their relationship to the next level, sharing a kiss at Brett’s apartment before making their way to the couch, where it seemed as though things would really go down.
However, the romantic moment was interrupted by Brett asking Casey if he would ever get back with Gabby. Casey’s hesitation ultimately ends the romantic scene, with both parties going their separate ways.
After the episode aired, fans took to Twitter and other social media to express their frustration. While some viewers seemed to be pleased at the direction the romance was going, many more decried the “lack of chemistry” between the actors, with one fan tweeting “horrible scene, and I don’t even say for the ship sent, but the lack of chemistry of the actors, total disaster.”
Another fan echoed that sentiment, tweeting “so forced give it up. No chemistry.”
While there’s no telling what could ultimately happen between Casey and Brett at this point in time, showrunners would do well to notice the fan reaction online and tailor future storylines accordingly.
