Ben Shephard fights back tears as Kate Garraway reveals husband Derek Draper’s last words to her before coma

Ben Shephard teared up as Kate Garraway gave a heartbreaking interview about her husband Derek Draper's coronavirus battle.

The 53 year old's husband has been in hospital fighting the bug for 10 weeks, with her now revealing he has beaten the illness — but doctors are unsure he will survive the damage caused to his body.

Kate's Good Morning Britain co-presenter Ben, 45, hosted the interview alongside Ranvir Singh, and couldn't help but show his emotions as Kate revealed the last words he had said to her and their two children.

Derek is father to Kate's two children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 10, who have both featured heavily on Kate's social media during their dad's battle.

Speaking about his admission to hospital, Kate said: "They put him in the ambulance, put a mask on him to breathe, and he just said to Darcey and Billy who came out all worried: 'You're the best children anyone could ever ask [for], look after mum, be good for her,' he went into the ambulance and that was it.

"He went into hospital, straight to intensive care, and in that first week it looked like he was rallying. The doctors were very positive, saying they were doing less oxygen levels, but he was very bad.

"I endlessly looked at some of the texts on his phone, he couldn't really speak to me because of the mask, but I was talking to the doctors and they would put it on speakerphone and he could shout things to me.

"He was begging me, saying, 'I can't stand this, I can't stand this, I feel like I'm suffocating every second of the day, I can't take it, please let them put me in a coma'."

She continued: "On the Sunday morning, they rang me up, and they said, 'we've got him here, we're going to put him into the coma, because overnight… we think it's best if we do that. He's here, he can hear you'."

Fighting back tears, the I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star then revealed the pair's last words to one another.

"He just said, 'I love you, I'm sorry I have to leave you,' and I said, 'it's only for three or four days, you're going to be fine, this is good, this is what you wanted and it will allow you to rest,' he just said, 'you've saved my life' because I think he thought I'd persuaded the doctors to put him in the coma.

"But he said: 'you've saved my life, and I don't just mean now, I mean being married to you and the children, you've saved my life', and I just said, 'I love you, I love you'."

The camera then cut back to Ben, who was seen blinking back tears and looking down to avoid getting too emotional on camera.

Kate added: "And the doctor said, 'he's gone, he's under' and that was it. That was the last time I spoke to him."
