Why Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli copped pleas in college admissions scam

Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli copped pleas in the college admissions scandal Friday after realizing the case against them was too strong — and because they feared their daughters would have to testify, according to a new report.

“It was going to get ugly,” a source close to the “Full House” TV alum Loughlin told US Weekly.

“Lori and Mossimo felt going to trial would just be reckless,” the source told the gossip site — especially since their daughters Bella, 21, and Olivia Jade, 20, might have had to testify about their roles in the admissions scam.

The daughters are already “devastated” that their parents now face two months in jail when they are sentenced Aug. 21, after pleading guilty in the case.

The actress and her fashion designer husband had been slated to stand trial in October; if found guilty, they each faced up to 45 years in the slammer for money laundering and bribery, top charges that will now be dropped under their pleas.

The couple also “were tired of being in limbo” and “couldn’t move on with their lives” with the prosecution still pending, US Weekly reported.

Ultimately, the couple realized that they couldn’t beat the rap anyway — the case against them was too strong, the source said.

Why makeup testers will be a thing of the past

It seems as though those fun trips with your friends to test out different types of makeup has come to an end. Many beauty stores are no longer allowing customers to try on communal new shades of lipstick or other products before purchasing them. This might cause an issue for those who want to make sure that bold new hue is right for them. Nearly 90 percent of people say testing out a beauty product is crucial for in-store shopping, according to Base Beauty Creative Agency (via Popsugar). Unfortunately, this testing ban could create big headaches for beauty stores that are planning to reopen in a post-quarantine world.

Part of the problem is the lack of guidelines issued for this specific problem. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the National Retail Federation has put out new instructions for safely reopening stores. The requirements include wearing a mask, taking employees’ temperatures, social distancing and disinfecting workspaces. However, there has been no rule put in place on what to do about product samples, which means retailers are left to figure this out on their own.

Beauty stores explain how shopping will change

Understandably, customers will likely have an elevated fear of germs when they return to stores. Jess Richards, founder of SHEN Beauty, told Popsugar she’s trying to figure out the right path forward. “This is the thing that I’m working through the most, because how are people going to test beauty products before they buy them?”

Ulta and Sephora have made the decision to get rid of makeup testing and instead will display samples for customers. “We are still in the early planning stages, but expect testers as we know them to go away,” April Uchitel, CEO of Violet Grey, told Popsugar. Putting out a similar statement, Sephora said, “When we reopen, testers will be for display only. We firmly believe that reopening stores without testers and services for the time being is the right decision to protect the safety and health of our entire community.”

Looks like our trips to the mall will look a bit different for the time being.

Why Noah Cyrus says growing up in Miley’s shadow was ‘unbearable’

This week, Miley Cyrus’ younger sister Noah has revealed that despite what it may look like from the outside, growing up alongside her famous sister was anything but easy (via People). Speaking to her fans via Instagram Live, the 20-year-old star said, “It was absolutely unbearable.” She continued, “Being born in the family I was in, everyone gave me such a hard time for having a hard time being Miley’s little sister… I always felt like I was that person that no one gave a s*** about due to what people said to me online.”

Discussing the lyrics to her latest song, “Young & Sad,” Cyrus got emotionally as said she spent her life growing up living in her big sister’s shadow. “And that’s why I write, ‘My sister’s like sunshine, bringing good light wherever she’ll go/and I was born to rain clouds, blessed in her shadows.’ Because that’s what everybody always says to me, that no matter what, I was going to be in that shadow.”

Noah Cyrus grew up living in Miley's shadow

And sadly, when it comes to the media’s and internet’s perception of her, living in the former Hannah Montana star’s shadow is something she’s never been able to shake, even to this day. “It was either that or that I wasn’t enough in some way, whether it was the way I look or the way I am,” the younger Cyrus said of the scrutiny she has received. “Like I said the other day, sometimes I feel like I don’t even breathe right sometimes,” the star added.

This isn’t the first time Cyrus has been vocal about the way her sister’s fame and the constant comparisons between the two have affected her. “It’s the reason I talk to a therapist three times a week, I swear,” she told Billboard in 2018. “It’s crazy. It’s just like, it’s annoying whenever you put your hard work into something and people don’t recognize it for what it is.”

‘Outer Banks’: Why Chase Stokes Almost Turned Down the Role of John B

Outer Banks is the latest binge-worthy Netflix series we didn’t know we needed. The series tells the tale of a Pogue named John B, who is desperately trying to find out what happened to his missing father — and the Royal Merchant gold he sought after.

Played by Chase Stokes, many Outer Banks fans might be surprised to learn that he initially passed on the role before his agent could convince him to audition for John B. Here’s why.

Rudy Pankow almost played John B

Rudy Pankow, who plays the role of JJ on Outer Banks, almost played John B instead. “Originally, [during] the first chemistry read, I was John B, and everything was pretty much lined up until the last chemistry read when they were like, ‘We’re not sure yet,’” Pankow explained to Us Weekly. “So I actually read through Rafe, JJ [and] John B within like two weeks. They flew me out to Charleston, saying, ‘You’re going to be one of these characters,’ but I didn’t know which one. The last audition I did in L.A. was John B., so I flew to Charleston thinking like, ‘All right, they want me as John B.’”

Showrunner Jonas Pate told Pankow how the casting team wasn’t sure about him playing John B, then asked him to read for JJ again. “They sent me three new scenes, and I’m like, ‘All right, this is ridiculous!’” Pankow said, explaining how stressed he had been after reading for three new scenes as a different character. “That’s when I met Chase [Stokes], and when I met Chase, the following chemistry read, it was crazy because I even saw it.”

Pankow added how his co-star Jonathan Daviss, who plays Pope in the series, helped him form the role of JJ. “I brought the version of JJ that’s in the show today, thanks to JD,” he said.

Why Chase Stokes initially passed on the role of John B

It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing John B. “The first time I got the audition it was the most bland email I’ve ever got,” Stokes told Barstool Sports’ Chicks in the Office. “It was four friends on a treasure hunt, Netflix, and the character’s name was John B. So I was like, ‘This is f*ucking Goonies. It’s a Goonies reboot.’ I said no.”

When asked why he wouldn’t have done a reboot of The Goonies, Stokes said: “I don’t want to touch a piece of iconic cinema and destroy it. I was like that’s my worst nightmare is doing a bad reboot.” Fortunately, when he saw the script a few months later, Stokes understood the concept better. Originally, he was asked to read for the role of Topper (Austin North), Sarah Cameron’s (Madelyn Cline) Kook boyfriend.

life goal: ride in the twinkie

“I read the pilot and I’m like ‘Oh my god, this is not The Goonies,” Stokes recalled, thinking: “I screwed this up so bad.” Fortunately, Stokes’ agent pushed him to return for another read-through of the script. Having known Pate her entire life, Stokes’ agent explained that Outer Banks was not, in fact, a Goonies reboot.

And the rest, as they say, is history! Stokes has made waves (pun intended) in a role he initially tried his very hardest to pass on.

Why Was Original Judge Merle Ginsberg Suddenly Replaced by Michelle Visage on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’?

Although Michelle Visage has worked alongside RuPaul for many years and is considered one of his best friends, she wasn’t always his right-hand woman on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Before Visage claimed her spot next to RuPaul on the judge’s panel, her seat was occupied by fashion writer Merle Ginsberg.

For the first two seasons, Ginsberg served as one of the head judges on the fan-favorite competition series. Though many viewers loved her intelligent humor and warm-hearted nature, she was suddenly replaced by Visage in Season 3 without so much as an explanation.

So, what was the real reason behind Ginsberg’s immediate replacement, and what has she been up to since her days as a RuPaul’s Drag Race judge?

Visage was initially picked to be a permanent judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race

If you’ve been a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race since the beginning, then you know that Visage hasn’t always been a judge on the show.

Before the New Jersey native came on board and started critiquing queens as a head judge, award-winning journalist, Ginsberg, held that title.

For the first two seasons, Ginsberg participated in Mama Ru’s Emmy winning competition series along with Santino Rice.

Dubbed the Paula Abdul of the judge’s panel, fans loved how sweet and caring Ginsberg was, as she always tried to understand where the queens were coming from while critiquing them.

Though she brought a ton of joy and humor to the beloved series, Ginsberg disappeared after Season 2, and for the longest time, no one really knew what had happened to her.

While the show poked fun at Ginsberg’s disappearance by telling the story of how Visage had killed her to take her place alongside RuPaul, the real reason wasn’t explained in the series.

So why was Ginsberg suddenly replaced by Visage?

It turns out that Visage was initially chosen to be a permanent judge on the show since she had already worked with RuPaul for years on The RuPaul Show and various radio stations.

However, due to the media personality being on a five-year contract with a CBS radio, she had to pass on the opportunity to judge alongside her friend for the first two seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

But, as soon as her contract was up, Visage joined the show as a permanent judge in Season 3, and she’s been there ever since critiquing queens on regular seasons and All-Star seasons.

What is Ginsberg up to today?

After getting replaced by Visage on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Ginsberg went on to appear in several television shows and continued her work as a credited journalist.

Over the years, she’s written fashion pieces for numerous magazines such as Women’s Wear Daily, Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Seventeen, Maxim, The New York Times Magazine, and Cosmopolitan. She’s even the Senior Fashion Writer at Hollywood Reporter Magazine.

Though she was replaced on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Ginsberg has made her return to the show in the past, serving as a guest judge in Season 7 on the Ru Hollywood Stories episode.

While she only made a brief appearance, it was good to see the fashion writer back on the judge’s panel next to RuPaul, and who knows, maybe she’ll return as a guest judge in future seasons since she knows a thing or two about criticizing drag queens.

Why Elon Musk and Grimes can’t really name their baby X Æ A-12

Surprise! The Elon Musk baby name story isn’t a wrap quite yet. As you may recall, just a few days back Musk announced his baby’s name to an incredulous Twitterverse: X Æ A-12. While some may have wondered if this was actually some kind of a joke, it turned out that Musk and baby mama Grimes were actually quite serious. Grimes even tweeted an explanation of the name that accorded with earlier speculation, at least for the A-12 part — yes, this is a reference to the A-12 aircraft, which she described as, “No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent,” and also referenced the plane’s nickname, Archangel, which she said is her favorite song (although there are a number of songs by this name, and she did not specify which one’s her fave).

As to the rest of the name, she says that X stands for “the unknown variable, adding in an emoji of crossed swords to further complicate matters. Æ is supposed to be her “elven spelling of Ai,” which she says stands for love (which it does in Chinese, according to Han Trainer Dictionary) or Artificial Intelligence. (Hmm, is she implying something about Musk that maybe we didn’t know? He could well be the world’s first robot billionaire!) Alas for all that Grimes/Musk naming creativity, since the state of California says nuh-uh, that elven aircraft name won’t fly their friendly skies.

California frowns on names with nonstandard characters

People spoke to family law attorney David Glass about Baby Musk’s moniker, and he cast doubt on the likelihood of this name being accepted as valid by the state of California. Glass explained that it’s not exactly illegal, yet the state tends to reject birth certificates where names are spelled out using characters other than the standard 26 letters of the English alphabet. Which means that yes, VSCO girls, you’re within your rights to name your babies “Sksksksk” or any other keyboard smash you come up with, as long as you stick to smashing only letter keys — according to Glass, “you can’t have numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts or other symbols or emojis. (Sorry, ’80s rock fans, Hüsker Dü, Mötley Crüe, and Motörhead are right out, though apostrophes are acceptable so Baby Guns N’ Roses should be okay.)

What will this mean for the Musk family? Glass speculates that should they submit a birth certificate with the name X Æ A-12, it will be rejected. They can appeal, but the appeal probably won’t succeed since California’s trying to hold back the rising tide of people who want to name their baby Poop Emoji. Papa Elon’s used to getting his own way though, and he’s got more than enough money to make things happen. So will they change the baby’s name, or will they instead choose to emigrate to a charming little cottage on the south coast of Mars? Stay tuned.

Why Robert Pattinson Probably Won’t Go Back to 'Twilight' After 'The Batman'

From 2008 to 2012, fans of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series flocked to theaters to see the movie versions. Over its five installments, The Twilight Saga earned more than $3.3 billion dollars. And stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart became household names as a result.

Now Meyer has announced Midnight Sun, a new novel told from the perspective of Pattinson’s Edward Cullen. Naturally, fans are wondering what this means for the movie series. Could a new Twilight movie get made? Sure. But it’s unlikely it would star Pattinson. Here’s why.

‘Twilight’ fans hope Robert Pattinson returns to Edward Cullen

Despite its epic box office haul, Twilight is one of the most divisive movie series in recent years. Hardcore fans can’t get enough of Edward and Bella’s love story. Moreover, the triangle involving the two of them and Taylor Lautner’s Jacob left fans pledging their allegiances to “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob.”

Pattinson and Lautner became heartthrobs because of their Twilight roles. With Midnight Sun on the horizon, the potential for this cast to return could be there. Fans are particularly eager to have Pattinson back as the brooding vampire hero who wins Bella’s heart. But the actor himself almost certainly wouldn’t want to step back into the role that made him famous.

But the actor spent years distancing himself from the franchise

After all, Pattinson has been vocal about not exactly loving the time he spent playing Edward. In fact, both he and Stewart — who dated in real-life during the franchise’s heyday — have made a concerted effort to distance themselves from their breakout roles of Edward and Bella.

In Pattinson’s case, he has largely stepped outside big-budget franchise fare since leaving The Twilight Saga ended. In 2014, he took on supporting roles opposite Guy Pearce and Julianne Moore. Then in subsequent years, he earned rave reviews for such critically acclaimed films as Good Time, High Life, and The Lighthouse.

In fact, the only other major franchise he’s participated in is Harry Potter. But Pattinson has come a long way since playing 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Much like Stewart, he’s become an indie mainstay. Having escaped the shadow of Twilight, Pattinson isn’t planning on taking another franchise role anytime soon. Well, except for his next project.

Plus, he will don the cowl in Matt Reeves’ superhero epic ‘The Batman’

Pattinson spent years trying to find his artistic voice as an actor. And he’s done so by playing a variety of character roles in smaller movies. So he probably doesn’t feel any particular need to take on a new franchise unless he feels drawn to the material. Such must be the case with The Batman.

The former Twilight star will go from playing a vampire to a vigilante dressed like a bat in Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie. Although we still don’t know a lot about The Batman, Pattinson has hinted about how he sees the character. According to reports, he’ll likely play Bruce Wayne in at least a trilogy of films. So will he be willing to juggle both Batman and Twilight?

Not likely. As much as fans loved him as Edward, Pattinson doesn’t seem moved by Meyer’s material enough to risk a career backslide. Rather, he’d probably prefer to take on whatever opportunities The Batman leads to next. Much like former Batman Christian Bale, expect Pattinson to weave in some offbeat character roles in between his run as the Dark Knight.

Here’s why Michelle Obama nixed dress code for White House butlers

Michelle Obama had White House butlers ditch their uniforms because she didn’t want her daughters thinking that “African American men served them in tuxedos,” she revealed in a Netflix documentary aired Wednesday.

The former First Lady said the get-ups worn by the butlers — elderly  African American and Latino men — sent the wrong message to Malia and Sasha, who were 10 and seven years old when they moved into the White House.

“When I went to visit [the White House] and have tea with Laura Bush, there were butlers there – fully dressed in tuxedos which they wore all the time, Most of them were African American or Latino, most of the time older men,” Obama explained in the documentary “Becoming.”

“What I spent a lot of time thinking about was, ‘How do I make this mansion with butlers and staff feel like a home for two little girls?’”

“I didn’t want them growing up thinking that grown African American men served them in tuxedos,” she added.

“The truth was that some of those men were my uncles. They were the Pullman porters and the folks – and I didn’t want my daughters to grow up with that image. So we had to change the dress code,” the former first lady said.

Obama, 56, also had to “beg” the White House housekeepers not to clean Malia and Sasha’s rooms so they would learn to do it themselves.

Her daughters at first resisted making their beds or doing their laundry, she recalled, “Of course, the girls were like: ‘They make your bed.’ And I was like, ‘I’m the First Lady. And I have a degree.’”

The documentary, which is based on the former first lady’s bestselling memoir of the same name, was released Wednesday.
