Tottenham transfer news: Diego Costa backed to complete surprise deadline day switch after 'flurry of bets' overnight

DIEGO COSTA has been backed to complete a deadline day move to Tottenham.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've seen 'flurry of bets' on the tenacious centre-forward joining Spurs.

Costa is a free agent having terminated his contract with Atletico Madrid at the beginning of January.

The 32-year-old scored 83 goals and provided 36 assists in 215 appearances for the Spanish heavyweights.

And he's got plenty of experience in English football too having helped Chelsea to two Premier League titles during his three-season stay.

He'll be eligible to join at any stage of the campaign but Betfair are offering odds of 6/1 that he arrives before tonight's 11pm deadline.

And that would mean he's available for Thursday's Premier League clash with Chelsea.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: "We’ve seen a flurry of bets on Diego Costa joining Tottenham this morning with Harry Kane’s injury.

"Costa is a free agent and can join up after window shuts but we make it 6/1 that he arrives at Spurs today."

Jose Mourinho could certainly do with a striker of Costa's calibre with talisman Harry Kane sidelined for at least another two weeks.

Spurs suffered a second-consecutive defeat away to Brighton last night – a result that left them six points off the top four.

Mourinho said his side lacked 'energy, enthusiasm and confidence' against the only side left in England's top four divisions without a win at home this season.

He said: "When you are too sad, you have no energy, enthusiasm or confidence, and that was what the team showed in the first half.

"[The squad] feel too much the absence of a player like Harry Kane."
