For generations, the royal family has operated under the stiff upper lip policy where they never explain or complain about details or rumors surrounding their lives. During her years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II has mastered this stance to a fault. However, for Meghan, Duchess of Sussex an outsider coming into the royal fold, it was an unbearable existence.
Though Meghan nor Prince Harry have given many details about their lives within the royal family, court documents from Meghan’s privacy claim against the Associated Newspapers give royal fans an inkling of just how challenging the duchess found royal life.
The royal family is reportedly very hurt and distressed by the revelation.

The British royal family knew Meghan Markle was going to have a very hard time fitting in
When Prince Harry introduced Meghan to his family just a few months after they began dating, the royal family had some major concerns. Though they were charmed by the duchess, they foresaw some of the issues that the couple would later encounter.
Prince William was startled by how quickly the relationship had become serious. When he brought it up to Prince Harry, the younger prince became immediately defensive. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge also tried to pull her brother-in-law to the side to caution him about the speed of his romance. “[Kate] gently reminded him that he was dating someone with a completely different life, past, and career and it would take time, care, and attention for them to integrate,” Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett write in Royals at War.
For his part, Prince Charles welcomed Meghan, but he also knew some major issues would come up in the future. “I think he [Prince Charles] likes strong women, but in The Firm, there is only room for one Queen,” royal expert Nigel Cawthorne told The Sun. “I think he foresaw considerable problems ahead for The Firm. Harry and Meghan amplified the popularity of the royal family in the way that Prince Andrew and Fergie did at the time.”

As we continue to reflect on some of the organisations supported by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, today we wanted to share more about @TheMayhew, an animal welfare charity which The Duchess became Patron of earlier this year. Mayhew believes in the power of community and the special bond between humans and animals, which is why their programming does not simply focus on rescuing animals but rather takes a more holistic approach to shaping the lives of pets and humans, alike. Their TheraPaws dogs and volunteers now visit not just care homes and hospitals, but also mental health facilities and youth groups – expanding the benefits of animal assisted therapy into much needed areas. They also work with the homeless community assisting with treatments and check ups for their pets so that the most vulnerable can trust that their pet will remain by their side. This year, Mayhew has continued its specialized work overseas, vaccinating more than 30,000 dogs against rabies and other diseases, and empowering locals to improve animal welfare humanely and sustainably. The Duchess is also proud that they are creating opportunities for women, with the female led vet team in Kabul neutering 2,500 dogs so far this year. As a long-time rescue dog owner, The Duchess of Sussex is proud to be Mayhew’s Patron and applauds them for the vital work that they do every day. Please visit @TheMayhew to learn more, as Mayhew continue their very important contribution to the community for all of us and the pets we hold dear. Photo © PA / Ivan Flores / Tamara Yoxall

Meghan Markle felt unprotected by the royal family while she was pregnant
One of the things that Meghan was not prepared for was giving over total control of her image. As self-made actor, image means everything to her. Not being able to respond to rumors and lies left her feeling helpless. It didn’t help that the royal family refused to speak on her behalf — as is their policy.
Court documents from Meghan’s privacy claim against Mail on Sunday, Associated Newspapers Limited reveal her feelings of helplessness. The claim reads,
The Claimant had become the subject of a large number of false and damaging articles by the UK tabloid media, specifically by the Defendant, which caused tremendous emotional distress and damage to her mental health. As her friends had never seen her in this state before, they were rightly concerned for her welfare, specifically as she was pregnant, unprotected by the Institution, and prohibited from defending herself. The stance of “no comment” was taken by the KP Communications Team without any discussion with or approval by the Claimant, as is standard practice for Royal communications.

The royal family is ‘very distressed’ about Meghan Markle’s claims
Though the Sussexes have not gone into detail about Megxit or their lawsuit, the royal family is increasingly nervous as more books are published and more details come out. After all, Prince Harry and Meghan’s exit left them vulnerable.
“Harry and Meghan leaving the firm left a void and I think the royal family was at risk of looking out of touch and dowdy without them,” royal historian Sarah Gristwood told Vanity Fair. “With Charles and Camilla over 70, and Anne about to get there, and the Queen scaling back, there is a serious vacuum when it comes to star appeal at the heart of the royal family.”
The royals are reportedly deeply troubled that Meghan felt unprotected while pregnant. “The claims that [Meghan] felt unprotected, especially when pregnant, will be very, very distressing to hear for the Queen, Philip, Charles, Kate, and William,” Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers told Good Morning Britain. “This is not gonna help, is it? They looked like they were just coming together and then BAM you’ve got this.”
