Getting kids to have an early night can be a huge battle.
So how much sleep do they actually need to be getting?
A teacher at Wilson Elementary School shared their advice on Facebook – and the post has been recirculating again recently.
The handy chart tells parents when their children should go to bed depending on their age.
Apparently, five-year-olds should be in bed by 7:30pm of they wake up at 7:00am in the morning.
This means they need roughly 12 hours of sleep, which is slightly more than six-year-olds who are said to need 11 hours of kip per night.
The primary school says parents can be a bit more lax with older children.
Their chart says 10-year-olds need around ten hours sleep.
Meanwhile, kids aged 11 or 12 can get away with going to bed at 9:15PM if they have to be up at 7am.
This gives them just over nine hours to rest.
The Facebook post has racked up more than 14,000 likes over the years – and many said the information was “helpful”.
While the chart doesn’t need to be followed strictly, it’s good to have a vague guideline on how much sleep your child should be getting.

The health service uses Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic guidelines to get the following estimations:

- night-time: 10 to 11 hours

- daytime: 2 hours 30 minutes
- night-time: 11 hours
12 months
- daytime: 2 hours 30 minutes
- night-time: 11 hours
2 years
- daytime: 1 hour 30 minutes
- night-time: 11 hours 30 minutes
3 years
- daytime: 0 to 45 minutes
- night-time: 11 hours 30 minutes to 12 hours
4 years
