The Paratas are relatively new to the Bay, and viewers have seen that Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams), Gemma (Bree Peters), Tane (Ethan Browne) and Nikau (Kawakawa Fox-Reo) are going through the grieving process for their brother Mikaere. Gemma realises that it’s been a year since her husband died, and so it’s time to lay him to rest back home in New Zealand.
She tells Ari, Nikau and Tane of their plans, and they decide to go back together as a family to carry out the Maori traditions around returning Mikaere’s ashes home. Nikau asks for time off, which Alf (Ray Meagher) accepts, and Ari also makes plans at work. Mackenzie (Emily Weir) tells Gemma she can have as much time off from Salt as she needs.
Meanwhile, Colby (Tim Franklin) is at the Diner when he gets talking to Alf – who reveals that the Paratas are making plans to travel to New Zealand that day. Still full of suspicions about the family’s connections to both the Diner break-in and Tori’s (Penny McNamee) carjacking, Colby clearly jumps to conclusions and presumes the Paratas are fleeing the country.
Unaware that Colby knows about their trip, the Paratas make it to the airport and reach customs. While Gemma makes it through without any issues, Ari is surprised when his passport is scanned and he is told to step aside. Tane and Nikau receive the same treatment, and Gemma turns to discover she’s the only one on the other side.
Tane urges Gemma to continue with the journey, acknowledging how important it is for her to take Mikaere home. Meanwhile, Nikau and Ari angrily react to airport staff telling them they’re not allowed to leave the country. The three return to the Bay, where they find out Colby has placed a travel ban on their passports while they’re under police investigation…
