Melanie C had everything she could ever want while in the Spice Girls — except happiness.
In a new essay for the UK Guardian, the 46-year-old singer admitted that the pressure and “cruel and heartless” nature of the industry caused her to sink into a depression.
“The lows of being famous were devastatingly hard. I was vulnerable, and the tabloids were cruel and heartless. It pushed me to the point of illness,” she confessed. “I was struggling with an eating disorder and suffering from depression.
“I had everything I’d ever dreamed of, and was desperately unhappy,” she continued. “It’s often forgotten that people in the public eye are human.”
Melanie, aka Sporty Spice, admitted she “avoided” anyone who would try to help her during those times because she felt “ashamed.”
“When the time came, it was down to the professionals,” she wrote. “Remember this: you deserve a better life. I continue to say it to myself and to others.”
Melanie C, whose full name is Melanie Chisholm, joined the Spice Girls in 1994 when she was 20 years old. The band broke up in 2000, but reunited for a tour in 2007 and again in 2019.
