Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s split from the British royal family is permanent, one year after announcing their resignation. While many people assumed the Sussexes had no interest in returning to royal life, it seems like Queen Elizabeth II was hoping the couple would cancel Megxit.

Nearly one year after the Sussexes’ official royal exit from the British royal family, they have informed Queen Elizabeth and the royal family that they will not be returning. The couple who is expecting their second child in Spring 2021, has set up a new life for themselves in California, with their forthcoming Archewell brand, as well as major deals with Spotify and Netflix.

The queen was not convinced that Megxit was going to work when the royal couple announced their resignation in 2020, but not it appears she’s resigned to the idea that they will not be returning to the royal fold.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family,” Buckingham Place said in a statement. “While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much-loved members of the family.”

Meghan and Prince Harry have been officially stripped of their patronages, and Prince Harry has had to relinquish his honorary military titles.

Why did Meghan Markle and Prince Harry leave the British royal family?

When Prince Harry and Meghan announced their resignation from royal life in 2020, fans were stunned. However, the couple had been dealing with constant attacks since the beginning of their relationship. Having seen what his late mother Princess Diana went through in the media, Prince Harry was unwilling to let his wife endure the same things.

“The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” Prince Harry said in a speech during a reception for his charity, Sentebale, in Jan 2020. “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always got it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”

For her part, Meghan has not yet spoken at length about leaving royal life, but she has spoken about being voiceless and helpless. The Sussexes are set to tell their side of the story on March 7 in the special. Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special.

Queen Elizabeth II had hoped Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would cancel Megxit

The queen has always sympathized with the Sussexes, and initially, she’d hoped they would settle in South Africa for a time. “Her Majesty was aware of Meghan and Harry’s wish to live an ‘ordinary’ life, which had reminded her of the years she spent with Prince Philip in Malta,” royal historian Robert Lacy wrote in his book, Battle of Brothers. “She thought Johannesburg could be their Malta.”

Up until recently, it looks like Queen Elizabeth assumed the couple would cancel Megxit. “The queen was hoping that they’d return, but there is not much she can do about it and accepts their decision,” a royal insider told Us Weekly. “After lengthy discussions with the palace, Harry and Meghan have quit being royals for good. It was their choice to leave.”
