Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex completed their final round of royal engagements before leaving their duties behind entirely on Mar. 31. The couple made a surprising “clean break” and are rumored to be “taking a break for the next few months” after posting a final message on their Sussex Royal Instagram account.
The Sussexes announced their decision to step back
After Prince Harry and Meghan announced that they wanted to take a step back from their royal duties, decisions were made rather quickly and the final date of Mar. 31 was agreed upon. After that, the Sussexes would no longer use their HRH titles or receive any public funding. They also had to give up the use of their ‘Royal Sussex’ brand.
In an Instagram post they shared right before their departure, the Sussexes offered their thanks and explained that their “work continues,” even if they no longer will share those details on the Sussex Royal Instagram account moving forward.

Prince Harry and Meghan made a ‘clean break’
One royal expert calls Prince Harry and Meghan’s final Instagram post and their exit from the royal family a “clean break,” with the couple ending their relationship with Buckingham Palace and taking a few months off.
Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to have Buckingham Palace “cease to be a part of their lives” as they moved on from their royal life was a “clean break” believed to have left the royal family stunned.
“Their Instagram account, which has 11.3 million followers, that is not being updated anymore. That will now be dormant,” ITV royal correspondent Chris Ship explained to Express. “The website they created SussexRoyal.com in January — now that will be dormant because they can’t use the word royal anymore.”
He added, “It shows how much has changed since theyfirst spoke about their departure. They wanted to keep all of this stuff. Theywanted to be called Sussex Royal. They wanted to have a Sussex Royal Charityfoundation.”
“I thought they would simply rename their Instagrampage and keep the 11.3 million followers,” Ship shared. “But they arehaving a complete clean break. They don’t want to be accused of taking theirroyal followers with them into their new life.”
He reiterated, “It’s a clean break from all thoseinstitutions.”
Ship further noted that “their office at BuckinghamPalace is shut” as they begin their next chapter, adding, “Buckingham Palacehas ceased to be a part of their lives.”

The Sussexes are taking a few months off
During his The Heir Pod, podcast, royal expert Omid Scobie explained that the Sussexes’ decision to take a break after they exited the royal family has “taken everyone by surprise.”
“This has been interesting because we had such a build-up since January to the departure of the Sussexes stepping back as senior working royals,” Scobie noted. “Suddenly on March 31 it sort of crept up on us really quickly, we had the couple announcing the beginning of their transition period over the next year on Instagram.”
He added, “At the same time, announcing that they are closing down their social media and their website and taking a break for the next few months. It’s sort of taken everyone by surprise because there was so much talk in the press about the couple preparing projects and ready to launch initiatives, and there was a foundation in the works. Actually, in reality, it was two people that were like, ‘We need a break too.’”
