Patrick Mahomes is taking extra precautions in the wake of the NFL’s recent COVID-19 scares.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Chiefs quarterback — whose teammate Jordan Ta’amu recently tested positive for the novel coronavirus — said he slept separately from fiancée Brittany Matthews, who is currently pregnant with the couple’s first child.
“When I went home over the weekend, I slept in a different bedroom, stayed away from her as much as possible,” Mahomes said. “Do my part, kind of keep myself away from her and social distance whenever stuff like this arises.”
Matthews, 25, announced her pregnancy last month, weeks after she and Mahomes, also 25, got engaged at Arrowhead Stadium.
On Monday, Kansas City got its fourth win of the season over New England. Two days later, however, Patriots cornerback Stephen Gillmore tested positive for COVID-19. Mahomes had hugged Gilmore at the end of the game, which he has since called a “mental lapse.”
“You just have to trust in the protocols and the process in place. It was a little bit of a mental lapse,” Mahomes said.
NFL cases increased Thursday, with another player from the Tennessee Titans testing positive for COVID-19.
