Never Have I Ever star Darren Barnet eats just like the rest of us—whenever and whatever he wants. There’s no eating regimen or diet. No set time either. Whenever he’s hungry, he goes straight for the kill. Talk about some intuition, huh? In the latest edition of Eat Like, Barnet spoke with Men’s Health and revealed his everyday eating habits.
Sometimes breakfast for this star doesn’t start till one in the afternoon. (It’s really brunch at this time, TBH). His “breakfast” consists of simple additions: multigrain toast with avocado spread and poached eggs with some onions, spinach, and cayenne peppers. His choice of drink? Orange juice and coffee.
Lunch is where Barnet really spices it up—he’s an avid fan of cultured cuisine. “I love Mexican food,” he says. “I love Japanese food. A lot of sushi.” But, surprisingly, this love of cultured takeout isn’t his biggest eating secret. What is? Sardines.
“Some people find this disgusting, but I’m telling you, don’t knock it till you try it: I love sardines,” he admits. “I will drench them with lemon, put them on a pan with some oregano, some basil, [and] top it with some cayenne pepper [and] pepper flakes.”
Then, he’ll lay the cooked small fish on a bed of rice—white or brown doesn’t matter—with a side of kimchi. Not only is it tasty, he says, but it’s also great for the body—full of protein and has wonderful health properties.
As for dinner, Barnet keeps it simple: protein pasta with beans and chicken. You’d think he’s purposely trying to bulk up on muscle, but he’s (sort of) not. He’s just listening to his body. “If I’m trying to put on muscle, I just listen to my body,” he says. “I eat when I’m hungry. I never try to overstuff myself.”
His cheat days are pretty standard too. Aside from occasionally munching down a whole box of pizza (by himself, mind you), he loves eating In-N-Out burgers. “Fast food can be an Achilles heel sometimes,” he says.
