My partner's mum has been staying with us during lockdown and she's ruining everything

DEAR DEIDRE:  MY partner asked her mum to move in with us for lockdown and it is ruining our relationship.

We have been together three years and we were once very happy. We are both 30. Our lovely daughter is a year old now and I love being a dad.

At her first birthday party my partner allowed her mother to slag me off for not doing enough and did nothing to stand up for me.

That hurt, especially as my dad, who’s always criticised me, joined in.

But my partner said I  was overreacting when I complained about it later.

We were starting to get our relationship back on track when she invited her mum to move in  for lockdown. I said I was against the idea but she went ahead and they gang up on me.

DEIDRE SAYS: This is probably feeling more raw because it’s triggering all the deep-down hurt inflicted by your critical father as you grew up.

It’s hard enough for a couple to adjust to being a threesome when their first baby arrives. Adding her mum to the mix was bound to cause tensions.

Talk to your partner, say your relationship is at risk. As lockdown lifts, best her mum goes home so you can work on developing a strong family unit.
