Massive Attack’s Tricky’s daughter found dead at a psychiatric hospital

The daughter of British record producer and Massive Attack collaborator, Tricky was found hanged at a psychiatric hospital on May 8 2019 after she believed people were laughing at her during a performance.

An inquest heard that Mina Topley-Bird, 24, died in hospital after she had suffered a mental health episode on a train following a gig she had with her band in Newcastle.

Mina was a talented musician and had performed with her band in Newcastle a few days before she was found dead at West Park Hospital located in Darlington.

In a statement to the coroner, Detective Sergeant John Tyers said Mina felt her last performance with her band 404 went badly and she thought the audience "laughed" at her.

The inquest also heard that Mina fell ill as a result while travelling back to her home in London while with her friend and bandmate Brendan Murphy.

Describing their journey back to London, Murphy explained that Mina appeared agitated and later told him she had tried to open the door of the train while it was in motion.

When Mina had got off at her stop in Darlington, Murphy escorted her to the hospital after she attempted to walk in front of cars, the inquest heard.

Murphy rushed Mina to A&E however as the pair had arrived, Mina attempted to harm herself again. Jurors were then told that she was transferred voluntarily to a secure ward.

Coroner James Thompson outlined the case to the jury and explained that Mina had suffered with her mental health for years: "She was well-travelled and clearly a talented young woman.

"She was a musician and a member of a band."

He added: ”She had sadly suffered from mental illness for some years.”

The officer who had investigated her death found there was no third party involvement, and said Mina had a history of self-harm and abuse due to mental health issues.

In the last few days of her life, Mina had received treatment for her mental health before she was under the care of the medical professionals in Darlington.

Tragically, the hospital staff at Darlington found Mina had hanged herself in her room at approximately 4pm on May 8 2019.

Dr Sonia Burrows, a Clinical Psychologist who assisted Ms Topley-Bird with her psychosis said when Mina was in a delusional state she believed she 'deserved to die for the bad things she had done.'

The coroner also mentioned following on from what was heard, the main topics of the inquest would be how Mina was assessed at Darlington Memorial Hospital and her admission to West Park Hospital.

The inquest, which is expected to last four days, continues.
