Make your own cheese during lockdown with these DIY kits

Whether it’s baking banana bread or making pasta, food has been getting a lot of people through lockdown.

But one inventive company is teaching people how to make one of the best-loved comfort foods around – cheese.

Online retailer The Big Cheese Making Kit does exactly what it says on the tin, offers various DIY packs – depending on the cheese of choice.

Prices start from £22.50 for kits, but there are other cheese-making items which can be purchased individually, such as a dairy thermometer and citric acid.

Currently, there are six different kits to choose from, including Mediterranean cheese, goat’s cheese and Scottish crowdie.

There’s also the ‘ultimate’ cheese-making kit – priced at £36.50 – which has potential to make 40 batches of 10 different cheeses (mozzarella, ricotta, mascarpone, halloumi, feta, Scottish crowdie, labneh, goat’s cheese, queso blanco and paneer.) This also comes with a range of herbs and spices, three cheese moulds and a recipe book.

Alongside this, there’s the vegan cheese-making kit – priced at £27.50 – which makes up to six varieties of fresh dairy-free cheeses. These include mozzarella, ricotta, mascarpone, halloumi, feta and parmesan.

According to the company website, all of the sets are 100% vegetarian and gluten-free.

It’s worth pointing out that these DIY cheese kits have been around for a while, but have recently gained attention with people turning to more self-sufficient ways in lockdown.

And if the online reviews on the website are anything to go by, cheese lovers won’t be disappointed.

One happy customer commented: ‘I cannot believe that making homemade cheese is so straightforward. Love it.’

While another said: ‘The cheese itself turned out really well, we were surprised and pleased with our results.’
