Loyd Grossman, 70, may not often appear on TV anymore, but he is recognisable to Britons up and down the UK thanks to his face being emblazoned on his range of sauces. With everything from curry sauce to risotto meal kits, Loyd is the king of easy home cooking – and the popularity of his sauce offering has made him a multi-millionaire.
So, how much has the veteran TV presenter made from his sauces?
Staggeringly, Loyd’s net worth is estimated at £50million.
Loyd created the sauce range in 1995, and they are produced by Premier Foods, who also make brands such as Mr Kipling and Bisto.
Many chefs create their own food range, but Loyd’s are consistently top sellers, and he was named the most successful celebrity brand in the UK, beating Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson.
His range was reported at the time to pull in £25million a year in sales.
It has not been all smooth sailing, however, with his curry sauces pulled from shelves in 2011 after two children were hospitalised with botulism after eating one.
Loyd does not just have his sauce range – and in fact made his name as a presenter and author.
In the UK, he is famed for presenting Masterchef from 1990 to 2000, and Through the Keyhole from 1983 until 2003.
Through the Keyhole was devised by Loyd along with Kevin Sim and David Frost, and it started out as a short segment on morning TV before moving to primetime in 1987.
Music is another passion for Loyd, and he still plays in a band. He started out with punk group Jet Bronx And The Forbidden, and now plays in The New Forbidden.
The New Forbidden have appeared on stage at Glastonbury eight times.
Loyd is not the only TV presonality to make a fortune through foo, with many chefs enjoying lavish lifestyles thanks to their popular food and kitchen ranges.
Jamie Oliver is one such person, and he has made huge sums of money from cookbooks, food, kitchenware and restaurants.
The celebrity chef has a fortune of £240million, according to Spear’s magazine.
Jamie had his first job in the cooking industry working as a pastry chef at Antonio Carluccio’s Neal Street restaurant.
He picked up skills on cooking Italian food before moving to The River Café in Fulham, where he worked as a sous-chef.
The popular chef was first noticed when appearing in a BBC documentary that was being filmed at the restaurant in 1997.
The appearance kick-started his career in the media and he was given a BBC show named The Naked Chef.
This ran for three series and Jamie topped up his bank account with a bestselling cookbook of the same name.
In 2000, Jamie was selected to be the face of Sainsbury’s, appearing in it’s advertising campaign. He worked with the brand until 2011 and it has been reported he was paid a staggering £1.2million per year for the deal.
