Many choose to embrace their grey roots when they come through and in recent years many celebrities have opted to bear their luscious grey locks on red carpets. While many aren’t fussed by their grey hairs, others might prefer to have them covered up. So if you fall into the latter camp, here are some handy tips for fixing grey hair.

How can you fix grey hair?

Hairdresser Michelle Sultan said while appearing on ITV’s Lorraine one of the most common questions she’s been asked since lockdown started is how people can disguise their grey roots.

But the good news is there are plenty of products on the market to help reduce the appearance of grey hairs which avoid at-home hair colouring.

Ms Sultan said: “One of the easiest ways to disguise those greys and blend those roots away is to use root powders and sprays. These are available online and at most chemists.

“The most important thing when using these is to choose the right colour and also apply them correctly.

“When using the coloured sprays, I always like to use a slightly darker shade to make sure you’re getting a more natural finish.

“A fantastic way to hide your greys is to style your hair differently to hide their appearance. You could use braids, hair ties, anything really.”

There are also ways of helping to disguise grey roots without having to buy any specific products for the job.

All you will need is a comb or hairbrush to carry out one of Ms Sultan’s clever tricks.

Ms Sultan added: “Another way to disguise the grey is to draw an imaginary zigzag line into the hair and then you end up with a broken up parting that is not so severe and it really does keep those greys disguised.”

There are also ways of disguising greys by adding a pop of colour to hair during lockdown.

Ms Sultan said some might consider throwing “caution to the wind” by using pop or wash-in colours.

Ms Sultan added: “If you’ve got dark hair you could even use wax crayons that look amazing.”

When do hairdressers reopen?

Many have taken to converting their bathrooms to at-home hair salons during the pandemic.

But if you’re not confident to deal with grey hair yourself, you can always wait a few more weeks to get professional assistance.

In the UK, hairdressers and barbers have been closed for several months due to lockdown measures.

However, in England, it is hoped hairdressers will be able to reopen from April 12, according to the Prime Minister’s roadmap.

In Scotland, hairdressers could potentially reopen at the same time as restaurants and gyms on April 26.

All lockdown restrictions are expected to remain in place for Northern Ireland until at least April.

However, hairdressers in Wales will be allowed to reopen from Monday, March 15.
