How to clean your mattress

You spend about a third of your life sleeping on your mattress, so why don’t you bother deep cleaning it? You need to clean your mattress thoroughly every six months. You should wash it even more frequently if you suffer from allergies.

Why do you need to clean your mattress?

There are plenty of reasons why you need to clean your mattress.

When you sleep your sweat seeps into the mattress, and the damp environment encourages fungi and bacteria to thrive.

On top of that, dead skin falls off during your slumber and dust mites will feast on these skin cells.

If you let the dead skin build up, the dust mites will make your mattress their home and start breeding there.

They don’t just breed, they poo twice their body weight every single day– all in the place you lay your head to sleep.

Not only are these factors unappealing and off-putting enough to make you run to your bedroom and strip your sheets… they are a health risk.

If you normally have allergies, the dust mites and their excretions will make your allergies worse.

Even if you aren’t prone to allergies, the mites and other nasties can lead to asthma, eczema, headaches, and sneezing.

All of this goes away if you clean your mattress every so often.

Got any stains on your mattress? From blood to sweat to spillages, we all have them.

Mix some lemon juice and salt together and rub it into the stain.

Wait for half an hour to an hour and wipe the paste off with a clean towel. The stain should have disappeared a little bit.

If you have a dark mattress instead of a white one you shouldn’t use lemon because it will bleach the mattress.

Try using washing up liquid, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and water in a spray bottle.

Spray it on the stain and blot it with a cloth.

Sprinkle baking soda all over your mattress and let it sit for several hours. 24 hours is desirable but not always possible.

The powder will absorb any moisture, deodorise the mattress, and kill off any bacteria.

You could add some essential oil to the baking soda to add another anti-bacterial element that smells gorgeous.

Lavender or eucalyptus aid sleep by calming the body, so these two oils are top picks.

Hoover away the baking powder and empty out the hoover bag.
