Foodies praise Japanese pancakes that are ‘much better’ than regular ones

It's Shrove Tuesday – or in other words… Pancake Day!

Some will have flipped and tossed their pancakes, while others are planning to do it a little later.

But before you even get the whisk out, you should know there's a new recipe that everyone's going wild for.

One way people seem to be celebrating this year is by making Japanese souffle pancakes.

The treat is slightly taller and has a different texture to any American pancake or crepe you're used to.

Souffle pancakes are airy and much lighter than traditional pancakes – all because of the way they're made.

For this recipe, you'll need to separate your eggs, then beat the whites into stiff peaks – quite like if you were making meringues.

The whites are then carefully folded into the rest of the batter before cooking and the completed pancakes become extra fluffy.

Many social media users are big fans of the treats with a number of restaurants whisking them up across the UK.

People on Twitter and Instagram have gone wild for the Japanese souffle pancakes.

One wrote: "Spent my morning learning how to make Japanese souffle pancakes. They are way better than regular pancakes."

Another added: "Oh my, I tried making those trendy Japanese fluffy pancakes and they're so tasty."

A third commented: "Japanese style pancakes are so much better than American style."

While some social media users vowed they will try the Japanese pancakes, others compared them to "cotton clouds".

These delicious treats aren't so difficult to make yourself either!

Nami Hirasawa Chen, a Japanese home cook based in San Francisco, US, shared a recipe on her site Just One Cookbook.

She says you'll need the following:

  • Two large eggs
  • 1 and a half tbsp whole milk
  • A quarter vanilla extract
  • Half tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 32g all purpose flour
