Eddie Hearn's mum Susan lands Royal Ascot Gold Cup glory with Subjectivist, the horse she bred with husband Barry

EDDIE HEARN is used to organising knockout blows in the ring – but it's his mum and dad who landed one at Royal Ascot.

While sporting legend Barry transformed snooker and darts and Eddie is the kingpin of boxing, mum Susan is the driving force with their horses.

She and Barry have seen their Mascalls Stud in Essex produce some sporting superstars of its own in the past few years.

Sir Ron Priestley is one, the five-year-old currently entered to run on Saturday of Royal Ascot in the Hardwicke Stakes, a race worth more than £90,000 for the winner.

But before that, in Thursday's mega-money Gold Cup, is Subjectivist, another hero of the turf brought through at Mascalls and owned now by Dr Jim Walker.

Both horses have shown that, for all multi-million pound deals Eddie seals, his parents can hold their own with some money-making horses.

Subjectivist won more than £100,000 when he triumphed in the Prox Royal Oak in ParisLongchamp last October.

That came before a £328,000 payday with victory in the Dubai Gold Cup in Meydan last March.

All in all Subjectivist has earned connections more than half a million quid during a globe-trotting, 16-race career – and scooped another £200,000 with Gold Cup glory.

That's a return on investment former chartered accountant Barry would be proud of.

Sir Ron Priestley is no slouch either, winning more than £413,000 in a career so far spanning just 12 races.

In that time he has finished worse than fourth just once and earlier this month brought home £51,039 after winning the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.

Both those horses are out of broodmare Reckoning, who the Hearns bought for £160,000 in December 2014.

She proved an inspired buy, repaying her fee more than five times over in the years since.

The couple also have a half-sister to Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley in training with Johnston too, so keep your eyes peeled for her in the near future.

Susan's success with horses is no recent revelation, she has been working hard in the background for years to produce top class runners.

Urban Fox was another star bred at Mascalls who went onto greatness, winning the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland in July 2018.

Victory that day scooped connections more than £127,000 – another hefty return for owners from a horse bought for just £10,000 as a yearling.

Urban Fox followed in the hoofsteps of other horses bred at Mascalls, including Cape Fear, Red Carpet and Exceptional Art.

Susan and Barry, who have been married more than 50 years, own racehorses too.

Currently running in the blue and orange silks are the likes of Typical Man, a 9-1 winner at Doncaster last month, with Villanelle and Your Love Is King also showing promise.

The only surprise is that Barry has not applied his Midas touch to the business of racing itself.

Calls for him to revolutionise the sport have been voiced loudest by AP McCoy.

But Hearn, 72, is winding down his commitments, stepping down as chairman of Matchroom Sport last month.

That decision was announced 12 months after surgery following a second heart attack.

So for now, he can put his feet up and watch his horses in action with his wife.

If the couple's lifetime in sport is anything to go by, they'll soon be celebrating another winner.
