- Claims she wrote him letter year before death expressing her love for the Queen
- Believes she would have ‘one arm around her children’ following Oprah interview
Diana’s former butler said he believes the Princess would have had ‘one arm around both her children’ following Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah.
Paul Burrell, 62, claimed that the princess was a ‘monarchist’ who wrote to him the year before her death in 1997 expressing her great respect for her mother-in-law the Queen.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain, the former butler claimed the Princess of Wales would have ‘wanted the monarchy to survive’ following the royal scandal and believes the Firm is an ‘important part’ of the UK.
‘People always ask me “What would Diana say” and it’s relevant to say she would have one arm around William and one arm around Harry,’ he said. ‘She would want them both to be happy, she wouldn’t want them to be divided.

Last night, the Queen broke her silence on Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey (pictured) in which they alleged racist comments were made about what colour baby Archie’s skin would be
‘Diana was a monarchist, she believed in the monarchy and she wrote me a letter the year before she died and said “I so long to hug my mother-in-law and tell her how deeply I understand what goes on inside her”.
‘She also said “I so want the monarchy to survive, the monarchy must survive. It’s so important to our country it underpins who we are”‘.
Paul is former servant of the British Royal Household, joining the household of Charles and Diana at Highgrove before acting as butler to the princess herself until her death in August 1997.
Last night, the Queen broke her silence on Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview to say that ‘while some recollections may vary’, the ‘whole family is saddened’ to hear of the couple’s ‘challenging few years’.

Her Majesty said an alleged racist comment made about what colour the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s baby Archie would be was ‘concerning’ and will be ‘addressed by the family privately’.
Paul called the statement ‘sharp and succinct’, and believed that the monarch will investigate the claims made by the Duke and Duchess in their explosive interview. He said that he had ‘never’ witnessed racism during his time at the palace.
‘It’s a very uncomfortable time for the Queen and a very uncomfortable time for the country her majesty has responded sharply and I think succinctly and said this will be dealt with in private, which is the way the palace deals with these things.
‘She will investigate it, it’s a serious complaint to make. I personally during my 21-years with the royal family have never seen any evidence of racism, in fact the reverse. Her Majesty has dedicated her reign to the commonwealth. ‘
Speaking of the claims, Paul said: ‘This [Oprah] interview was a masterclass in interview technique and it was edited very carefully.
‘I personally feel we don’t know the full story behind this racism comment, we don’t know who said it, we don’t know the context in which it was said.
‘All of that has to be explored and I think it should be done privately and in fact the findings of Buckingham Palace will become public.’
During the couple’s highly-anticipated two-hour interview, Meghan hailed her ‘happy ending’ with Prince Harry and Archie now the family are in California – calling their escape from the UK ‘better than any fairy tale’
