Coca-Cola Christmas advert leaves Brits in tears as iconic truck makes a return

Viewers were left welling up after tuning in to this year's Coca Cola Christmas advert.

The two minute and 30 second clip was directed by Oscar nominated filmmaker Taika Waititi, whose most recent directing credits include Thor: Ragnarok and the black comedy film Jojo Rabbit.

The advert begins with a young girl saying goodbye to her father as he heads off to work, but as he starts to drive off she flags him down and hands him a letter addressed to Santa Claus.

Her father appears to have forgotten about the precious envelope until he tucks into his lunch – including a bottle of Coca Cola – and sees the letter in his lunch box.

Panicking as he sees a post boat sailing away, he quickly jumps into a small boat which ends up breaking down mid-journey and sees him washed up on the shore – still with the letter in hand.

As he battles snowy mountains, swamps, and dirt tracks on a motorbike, the man eventually makes it to Father Christmas' house in the North Pole.

Upon leaving the letter on the doorstop, the father falls to his knees as he sees a sign on the front door which reads: "Closed for Christmas."

However, just as he's about to give up the famous Coca Cola truck pulls up and the man hops inside.

As he arrives back home, the driver hands him the letter back and his the father opens it up, he realises his daughter had written: "Dear Santa, Please bring Daddy home for Christmas."

His little girl then runs out of the house and into her father's arms as the famous truck drives off – and viewers realise that it was Santa who was driving.

Viewers were quick to take to social media and praise the short film.

One person joked: "I'm not crying at the Coca-Cola Christmas advert, you're crying at the Coca-Cola Christmas advert."

Another user described its as a "tear jerker" before crediting the acclaimed director.

"That man is too good! Just two minutes of pure awesomeness," they wrote.

A third person added: "Dramatic, sentimental, and likely to reduce you to tears."

And another commented: "I've never cried at a Coca-Cola advert before but @TaikaWaititi has worked his magic and now I'm bawling."

The advert comes after it was revealed that Coca Cola have cancelled the Christmas truck tour for the first time in 10 years.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the big red truck won’t be making its way around the UK.

In a tweet, the company said: "Due to current restrictions around the country, our Coca-Cola Christmas Truck Tour won't go ahead this year.

"We know it's disappointing, but we'll continue to share special Christmas moments throughout the festive season.

"We look forward to seeing you next year!"
