BHA chiefs confirm that racing will continue and dimiss rumours that elite sport will be suspended

RACING chiefs have dismissed rumours that the sport will be suspended amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

Government officials from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport are believed to have told the BHA that no formal meetings concerning a suspension of elite sport have taken place.

Rumours circulated on social media on Sunday evening that the government was set to call a halt to all sport.

On Monday morning, the official BHA Twitter account said: "British racing continues behind closed doors this week."

The BHA later tweeted a reminder to all participants to follow the Covid-19 protocols in place – both on course and in yards.

According to reports, the government is concerned about adherence to Covid-19 restrictions in football.

This follows video footage on social media of players celebrating in changing rooms over the weekend, which sparked an angry reaction online.

On Monday afternoon, the Scottish FA announced that all football below the Scottish Championship would be suspended until at least the end of January.

Racing was the first major sport to return after the initial shutdown last spring.

It restarted on June 1 at Newcastle, with strict protocols in place at racecourses since then to ensure the safety of participants and that official guidelines are followed.

The BHA have continued to work closely with government as the sport carries on behind closed doors.
